Katy Perry Wore Vivienne Westwood at the Coronation and Here’s Why it Matters

Katy Perry’s attendance at the coronation of King Charles III was more than just a celebrity call, but a sartorial and political one as well

Throughout history, the monarchy has made use of clothing as a way to promote and even negate principles and ideas. From Queen Elizabeth’s reason beyond the bright and colorful articles of clothing to Princess Diana’s notorious revenge dress, fashion is indeed a political subject as much as it is a political choice. And as it never goes unnoticed when a royal event takes place, it is no surprise that Katy Perry has made a statement of her own at the coronation of King Charles III.

Donning the designer

The British Asian Trust ambassador graced the occasion clad in a lilac leatherette coordinate courtesy of the fashion house, Vivienne Westwood. Incorporating history into her bespoke outfit, the Maison mentioned that the fabric came from the Vivienne Westwood archives. Besides the short-sleeved jacket and skirt, Katy’s look was completed by her gloves, hat, and flower corsage. She also donned the trademark pearl choker and white bag of the house.

The singer-songwriter continued her Westwood agenda at the Coronation Concert with a custom gold gown with detachable sleeves. The ballgown had a balloon skirt and a deep sweetheart neckline, adding elements of shape into the design.

Standing for the designer

Dame Vivienne Westwood, who established her fashion line in the early 70s, was a punk priestess who was known for her activism beyond fashion. Because of her elaborate activism supporting democracy and raising awareness on climate change, there had been an underlying notion that she and the Royal Family did not see eye to eye.

However, the late designer and the new King Charles had always shared their advocacy for climate change. Although many of Westwood’s fans assumed her distaste for the monarchy, the two seemingly opposing figures had always supported the climate revolution. In the span of her career, Vivienne even once closed a show wearing a Charles-printed shirt.

Just like the designer’s attendance to the palace to receive her Order of the British Empire medal, Katy donning a Vivienne Westwood piece in a royal event is more than just a statement of support. It also serves as a reminder today that two individuals can come together—despite their opposing backgrounds—and promote a bigger change in this world.
