Miss Universe Philippines delegate, Kheshapornam Ramachandran proves a woman like her can do everything the society says she can’t

Kheshapornam Ramachandran sure knows her name is a mouthful, based on her introduction video for Miss Universe Philippines. Khesha, as she prefers to be called base on her Instagram, is a Filipina-Malaysian/Indian from Iloilo, and is not new to the pageant scene. Among pageant aficionados, many await the 20 year-old Ilongga because of her proven prowess in carrying herself as a beauty queen. She was hailed as the Mutya ng Pilipinas 2018’s Tourism Queen of the Year International and was also declared as the “Best in Swimwear” and “Best in Evening Gown” at the time.

Aside from joining beauty pageants, Khesha’s also into sports, acting as a center guard in her basketball team that represents Western Visayas in Palarong Pambasa. She’s also currently an Aircraft Maintenance Technology student at the Asian College of Aeronautics, and apparently the only female in her class.

The 175cm tall achiever and multifaceted woman breaks the mold of what a traditional young woman should be. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the mahinhin image that was used to deemed as an ideal trait of a dalagang Filipina, until this will be used as a term to limit a woman of what she wants to become. Even if Khesha does many extraordinary things, these doesn’t exempt her from criticisms like getting comments on how dangerous her course is or her chosen sport is for men.

Following the success of the recent Olympic medal holders, Hidilyn Diaz and Nesthy Petecio who prove that sports have no gender, one of Khesha’s advocacy is to stand and give support to female athletes like her. Through this exclusive interview with Khesha, she will share with us how she overcomes these struggles of being a modern day Filipina.
