From “Sana Maulit Muli” to “Sana,” Kiana turns her parents’ classic track into her own contemporary take
Adding another layer of tune to the saying, “Like father, like daughter,” R&B songstress Kiana Valenciano laced her latest single with a sonic homage to her father, Gary Valenciano. While “Sana” stands as a track of its own, the nostalgic opening beat and instrumentals took after the Pure Energy’s classic ballad, “Sana Maulit Muli.”

While the 1988 song carries the message of wanting to revive the past, Kiana’s verses are all about choosing to move on for one’s own good. Her words “In another life, I’d still say sana” are Gary’s lyrics “Sana maulit muli.” The track is also a tribute to the matriarch of their family, Angeli, who co-wrote the song.
“‘Sana’ is a song for and about all the ones that got away,” the R&B artist shares. “It’s about acknowledging that you wouldn’t change the past, but you can’t bring this person with you into the future.”
Tinged with conflicting feelings of yearning but also of knowing better, Kiana added beats and hi-hats to the ballad for a little pick-up to the longing feel of the song. In a previous interview with MEGA Entertainment, the musician has expressed that she had been dabbling into fictional scenarios for upcoming releases. “My music naturally evolves as I do. I’ve been able to reminisce and reflect on my life with appreciation and understanding instead of resentment. It’s also been really interesting to craft stories purely from imagination. You’ll hear all of this in my upcoming releases.”
