Skincare is everything
Angeline Dela Cruz for Maureen Wroblewitz
“For me, a proper skincare routine is a must. Prepping the skin before applying your makeup makes such a huge difference. Plus, it’ll help keep your makeup looking fresh for hours.
“Always accentuate the eyes. Use a good pair of lashes that suit your eye shape—I personally like using wispy lashes for glam looks. And, don’t forget to use waterproof eyeliners and mascara. Also, don’t forget to use a setting spray to ensure that your makeup stays in place!”
Know your personality
Carissa Cielo Medved for Katrina Dimaranan
“Wear makeup that matches your personality and facial structure. The secret of knowing what make up to use is to understand the personality you are trying to emphasize or project. Is it hot girl summer? Is it regal queen? Personality matters! At the same time, knowing your facial structure helps in the make up process. Each facial structure is unique, so [it’s] not [one] size fits all. When it comes to techniques you can read or watch; you have to make your own adjustments. But, knowing how to understand your own personality and facial structure is key to fabulously done make up. And, when you do, the creativity starts happening.”
Use earth toned products
Byron Velasquez for Jasmine Umali
“First thing to consider when doing pageant make up is the lighting requirements of the stage. I usually use one shade darker than the skin tone and intensify the eyes since makeup will catch the light from the stage. If it’s lighter, it usually tends to wash out the face. Use earth tones since this will best bring out the natural features of the face. And, if it’s televised, use HD foundations and a well milled powder. It helps big time.”
Study your features
Lei Ponce for Leren Mae Bautista
“As an experienced makeup artist immersed in different productions, the best pageant makeup tips that I can share is to always study the features of your queen and learn how you can make their look standout under the harsh lighting of the stage.
“My usual go to makeup is a smoky wing, which I call ‘snatched smoke.’ Starting by smoking out a jet black pencil liner then working on cool and warm brown shadow tones. Intensified by a jet black eyeshadow finishing with a white matte eyeshadow on the brow bone to make all the colors pop out. Full wispy lashes will complete the look. For contour, I always use a combination of warm bronzer and gray brown contour for a more natural look against harsh light.”
Analyze the lighting
Guilly Valenzuela for Ingrid Santamaria
“As a makeup artist who also does work for TV and pageants, the best makeup tip I can give is to know the stage lighting. If ever you’re not yet sure about the stage lighting, always use white light/natural light when doing your makeup because it’s the safest in doing pageant makeup. You can easily adjust it if there is something that needs to be corrected.”
Know your skin type
Muriel Vega Perez for Ayn Bernos
“Skincare—it is very important to have a good skin when you join pageant. For make up application, always prepare your skin with the right kind of skin care products. Example: moisturizer, eye cream, lip cream, etc.”
“For primers, it is very important to know your skin type and the needs of every part of your face, such as: eye primer, lip primer, brightening versus protecting versus blurring primers. This is so your make up would last long. Lastly, pick your best face asset. Example, would you look good ba wearing a smoky eye and nude lips or wearing subtle eyes and red lips? Not all would look good in the traditional pageant smoky eyes look.”
