Lady Gaga reminds us that no matter who or where you are, always wear your mask, because like she says: “It’s a sign of respect.”
It’s no surprise by now when Lady Gaga goes all out to make a statement whenever she sets out into the public. I mean, who can ever forget her four outfit changes all in the name of high camp at the pink carpet of the Met Gala in 2019. And in this year’s MTV VMAs, it was no-holds-barred for the deity of pop as she showcased nine outrageously beautiful looks that had us stunned with jaws to the floor.
While we can’t deny the fact that her Nicola Formichetti-curated ensembles were outstanding, there was one accessory in each of her fits that was a true testament of the times: face masks. If you’ve been following the news and frequently scrolling through your social media accounts, we still see countless people refusing to wear a face mask when they’re out of public just because they feel they have the right not to opt to. And even if these Karens and Bobs are well-aware of the hazards of the coronavirus, they still don’t believe in what global news outlets and the World Health Organization have advised the public.
So, if they’re not gonna listen to the authorities, then maybe some of them might finally listen to the activist of pop. At the 2020 VMAs, Lady Gaga had some masktivism moments as all her looks featured her wearing these ingeniously interesting face masks. She also made it a point to remind everyone to “wear your mask, [because] it’s a sign of respect.”
Moon Man
Upon Lady Gaga’s arrival, everyone would know she’s attending the VMAs—all thanks to her outfit. She walked the red carpet in an intergalactic ensemble by Area alluding to the Moon Person VMAs trophy. And to keep her safe from the unwanted minuscule virus, she wore a fishbowl-like face shield by Conrad Muscarella.
Mad Max
Following the red carpet, she immediately changed, donning a metallic iridescent feathered mini dress by Iris van Herpen. She completed her look wearing a pink leather face mask strapped around her face as if she’s starring in Mad Max.
Horn-y
As she got back to the stage once more, she appeared in a bright green ballgown by Christopher John Rogers that exuded such regality for a queen like her. But to keep her edginess intact, she wore a Lance Victor Moore horn-embellished face mask.
Cyberzone
Since the VMAs won’t be complete without any big performances, Lady Gaga definitely gave us what we were hoping for: true showmanship. And in all her performances on stage, she wore a digital face mask by Smooth Technology, created in collaboration with visual artist Diego Montoya.
Crystal Ball
Much like a true star that shines in Hollywood, Lady Gaga wore the mask that she deserves: a Maison Met crystal face mask. She emerged on the stage wearing this breathtaking Maison Valentino haute couture feathered creation, which was our favorite look.
Rock ‘n Roll
Finally, she capped off the night with a much more casual outfit and struck a pose on the red carpet with her five trophies. She wore her very-own merch, a Chromatica oversized T-shirt paired with an edgy Michael Ngo mask adorned with studs and chains.
