ILLUMINATING
Peewee Reyes-Isidro, Editor-in-Chief
2021’s Color of the Year is all about hope, strength and uplifting the spirit. This sunny color is the gift we’ve all been looking for—color-wise anyway. Prominently seen on the Off-White and Prada runways, in wild checkerboard prints and other bold statement pieces, this bold yellow shade is singular in its radiance. Paired with Ultimate Gray, the other Color of the Year, and Illuminating stands out, a ray of light that guides us to a (hopefully) brighter future.
On a personal note, I also chose this color as my featured trend because I want to embrace positivity and lightness, two things that dodged so many of us in this trying year. Wear it as bright accent piece like this divine Versace scarf, put it into high gear as a metal via gold chains and timepieces or as a playful pop of color on the face through eye liner or eye shadow. Just talking about it already puts a smile to my face, as I’m sure it will yours. 2020 hasn’t been easy, but let’s solider on—in time everything will be illuminated.
THE (RE)BIRTH OF VENUS
Lyn Alumno, Fashion Associate
An antithesis to the futuristic techno trend, the Renaissance period has been reincarnated, not just by fashion houses, but the Instagram generation too. As a self-confessed art history geek, my style and works have always been influenced by and imbued by the grandeur of paintings from the Rococo and Renaissance movement. This includes even the religious undertones.
Sure there’s logomania still floating around, but Venus, David and The Girl with the Pearl earring are all having a moment right now.
UNDER PASTEL SKIES
Nicole Almero, Sr. Graphic Artist
We’ve seen how the pastel color trend dominated our social media timelines. While we’ve been under quarantine since March 2020, the virus didn’t stop us from enjoying our summer the way we should—especially through fashion, at the very least.
The best thing about this colorful candy palette is when all the shades are put together into one outfit: they evoke images of ice cream, candy floss and other saccharine childhood delights. The result is a pop-infused, nostalgic daydream. We all adore this classic pastel concoction, but if you want to really up your style game, I suggest pairing them with statement prints—the bolder, the better.
