The night has finally arrived and the roster of celebrities made their way up the stairs of the Metropolitan Museum of Art dressed in their stunning designer pieces. And as the biggest night in fashion is here, we rounded up a list of women who arrived in exquisite looks.
Dua Lipa in Chanel
Met Gala Co-Chair Dua Lipa definitely got the assignment right. She was donned in a vintage Chanel piece from their 1994 Fall/Winter Haute Couture collection worn by Claudia Schiffer on the runway, becoming the iconic Chanel bride with her knitted corset gown. However, the show-stopper of this look was Tiffany & Co.’s new Legendary diamond adorned on her neck, the first time the 100-Carat white diamond has ever made a public appearance.
Penélope Cruz in Chanel
Also a Co-Chair to the event, Penélope Cruz arrived in a ball gown that was inspired by a piece from Chanel’s Haute Couture Spring/Summer collection in 1988. Her ball gown featured delicate tier drops of gemstones cascading down the skirt while the bodice was decorated with sequins and pearls, and the organza shroud was draped over her sleek updo.
Rihanna in Valentino
There’s no such thing as a late entrance if you’re arriving in a piece that is nothing short of extravagant. Rihanna made her presence known as the last to appear in her custom Valentino piece featuring a rosette-covered shroud that opens to reveal a simple yet elegant bodice decorated with a small rosette. She added shine to her look with the layered silver choker necklace from Boucheron.
Lily Collins in Vera Wang
The Emily in Paris actress may have gotten some tips from the French as she entered in a piece that exudes class and elegance. Her Vera Wang custom gown had the classic black and white combo as seen on the white bustier finished with puffed sleeves, and a puffy tulle skirt that had “Karl ” sewn on the dress. To complement the delicate plunge on the neckline, Lily wore a statement necklace from Cartier’s new high jewelry collection, Le Voyage Recommencé.
Florence Pugh in Valentino
The actress always makes it a point to go big, and she did just that at the Met. Her custom Valentino gown had a balance of sultry and sophistication with the daring bust cutout that goes down to her torso and to her back, and the look was tied off elegantly with a dainty black bow at the front. However, the definite highlight of her entire look was her buzzcut hair debut that she accessorized with a Valentino headpiece.
Anne Hathaway in Versace
It was everything that Karl Lagerfeld has done, along with Donatella Versace’s distinct design identity. Anne Hathaway channeled her inner fashion spirit as she showed up at the steps of the Met in a white tweed gown featuring cutouts that went down from the bodice to the torso and the side—all pinned with Versace’s signature gold safety pins. Her overall look was finished with the matching white tweed gloves and dainty choker from Bulgari.
Nicole Kidman in Chanel
The actress made a nostalgic decision by opting to wear the pink tulle dress she wore in 2004 for her Chanel No. 5 commercial. The silhouette of her bodice was sleek enough to give way to the sequins that cascaded down to the drop waist. Meanwhile, her skirt was embellished with 250 pink feathers from top to bottom.
Billie Eilish in Simone Rocha
What better way to debut her black hair by going all black for her Met Gala look? Opting to embrace Karl Lagerfeld’s playful take on punk fashion, the musician wore a custom Simon Rocha piece that had a bustier underneath the sheer black lace starting at the high mock neckline and cascaded down to the hem. The all-black ensemble was then finished off by simple detailing such as the black opera gloves, ribbons that were wrapped around her hair, and jewelry such as earrings and rings from Cartier.
Jessica Chastain in Gucci
Jessica Chastain went full on Karl Lagerfeld as she embraced the late designer’s go-to ensemble in her own interpretation. The custom Gucci piece had a tiered black ruffled skirt to complement the tulle draped bodice—an ideal balance between class and drama. Meanwhile, the ultimate Lagerfeld detail in her look was the statement necklace and black shades that had silver embellishments on the side.
Anok Yai in Prabal Gurung
The Chanel muse makes a rather bold statement by referencing Karl Lagerfeld’s much loved gold detailing he often used back in the 90s. Her gilded dress had a plunging neckline that stopped right by her bust, and her skirt had an exaggerated puff to it. But it was the unique transition of gold to silver threads hanging on the skirt that made her overall look distinct and elevated.
