Predicted as this year’s summer blockbuster, Barbie gets greenlit by the MTRCB for its showing in the Philippines
It’s official—the Philippines will turn pink! In a public statement released just last July 11, the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) confirmed the Parental Guidance (PG) rating of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.

The statement also explained the decision of the agency regarding the nine-dash line controversy. “[The] Review Committee is convinced that the contentious scene does not depict the nine-dash line. Instead, the map portrayed the route of the make-believe journey of Barbie from Barbie Land to the ‘real world,’ as an integral part of the story,” it said.
This board’s decision to screen the motion picture in the Philippines is a response to Senator Francis Tolentino’s call to ban Barbie. In an interview, Tolentino mentioned, “This will not just be injurious to the Republic of the Philippines, but would be contrary to what our country fought for and achieved under that Arbitral Ruling in 2016.”
MTRCB also reminded those who are making, producing, and distributing films of the Republic Act No. 9522 or the Philippine Baselines Law. According to the law, the Board has the power to ban and sanction films featuring the nine-dash line.
The agency added, “Rest assured that the Board has exhausted all possible resources in arriving at this decision as we have not hesitated in the past to sanction filmmakers/producers/distributors for exhibiting the fictitious nine-dash line in their materials.”
Barbie is the most-awaited film starring Margot Robbie as the main doll to explore the “real world.” All over the globe, fans have been looking forward to its much-anticipated release. The power of the iconic doll goes above its influence on children, with fashion, architecture, and music highlighting Barbie’s signature pink color and bright personality.
