Color analysis determines the hair color that looks most flattering on you. In some cases, it’s not the one you’re born with
At what point do we question the beauty of what we were born with? We’re in an epoch of personalized beauty and with it, the prominence of “personal colors.” Now, a question arises: Is our natural hair color our most flattering look? MEGA consulted Robyn Brillantes Pamintuan, the color analyst behind Color Analysis Studio PH, to explore why our hair’s natural hue may not have been a choice we had to make, yet can still reign as the winning look.

The Starting Point
Personal color analysis is a window into what any shade you wear can do to your features. From clothing to cosmetics and hair, every choice matters. That said, is nature’s pick really your best fit? It’s less of a perfect match for Korea-trained certified color analyst Robyn Pamintuan, and more about potential. “Your natural hair color is often a great starting point. It naturally complements your skin tone and reflects the depth of your eyes,” she shared. “But it isn’t always the perfect match.”
In some cases, natural hair can create an imbalance, especially if the contrast with your eyes becomes too stark. It can be distracting, she explained, when the depth of one’s hair is noticeably different—either much darker or lighter than your eyes. Vanity aside, the right color also makes you look more inviting. “This makes it easier for others to hold eye contact and engage in meaningful conversation,” Robyn added.
So, how do you refine or reimagine your hair color while keeping it flattering? It’s in the balance. “The goal is always to ensure the hair supports the face, with the eyes as the main focal point,” the color analyst said. Thus, soft features shine with gentler tones, while striking contrasts—like dark eyes and fair skin—thrive with richer shades or strategic highlights.
Perfect Harmony or Lost in Translation?
It thus gets a lot more complex when you realize your hair color’s power to hum with harmony or jar with disconnect. Pamintuan draws on two striking examples to prove her point. Who gets it right and who could do a little tweak?
Andrea Brillantes is the poster child for natural balance. “Her natural deep brown hair and dark eyes are pure harmony,” Robyn explained. Because of this, her whole get-up looks effortless and balanced. The harmony between her dark eyes and tresses draws you in. “Simpleng maganda. That’s the power of true color harmony.”
In contrast, Robyn points to Ariana Grande as an example where adjustment could amplify. “Ariana Grande’s very light blonde hair works for her role in Wicked, but for Ariana itself, it feels a bit disconnected,” she said, explaining that the lightness gives a washed-out look that doesn’t sit too well with her warm undertones and deep brown eyes. “A warmer blonde—like honey or caramel—would make such a difference. That said, I can’t help but look forward to seeing her return to her lush brunette days—healthier, natural hair that complements her beautifully and feels authentically her.”
Before Reaching for the Dye
Booking a personal color consultation may sound tempting at this point. After all, your hair deserves its moment of glory. But until then, Robyn shares a few golden rules if you’re ready for it.
Start with your eyes. The right color will echo or balance the depth. Lighter eyes can get lost against overly dark hair, while deep eyes come alive with rich tones that amplify their intensity.
Then, consider your skin tone. Warm undertones glow with golden, caramel shades, while cool undertones shine brightest with ashy or icy hues. Also, stray away from blindly jumping into trends; it should always be about what makes you look like you—at your best.
And if you’re nervous about diving in, dip a toe. Highlights, lowlights, or a gloss are subtle ways to test the waters. Robyn’s parting wisdom? “Always trust a good stylist who can guide you toward a shade that brings out your best features.” It’s a moment in the making.
