From Jason Wu’s take on siren skin to Sandy Liang’s beauty approach to balletcore, these are the standout beauty looks from New York Fashion Week

The New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2024 season is nothing short of a visual feast. On the runway, coveted brands and luxury houses exhibited renewed senses of creativity through decade-defining ready-to-wear circuits. The story behind every presentation can’t be left unmentioned either. Sandy Liang, for one, looked to Sofia Coppola’s film The Virgin Suicides as inspiration. Meanwhile, newcomer PH5 paid homage to garment workers with its sustainable collection called Life in the Factory.

But that’s not all. Of course, each collection introduced an influx of exciting makeup formats that are poised to shape the future of beauty. From Jason Wu’s take on siren skin to Sandy Liang’s beauty approach to ballet core, these are the standout beauty looks fresh from the New York Fashion Week runway.

Designers like Anna Sui and Jason Wu officially call it: Mermaidcore is here to stay. Inside the Crosby Theatre, Sui’s models presented a series of fresh skin, watercolor-inspired eye makeup, and, glossed lips. Meanwhile, Wu’s Spring/Summer 2024 Solstice beauty direction is all about a healthy, dewy, and radiant complexion. And with this, we can’t help but wonder — is it time to say goodbye to mattes and hello to glassed skin again?

Balletcore beauty

Sandy Liang is undeniably one of the poster-girl brands of the rising balletcore. With a collection that reflects shared girlhood experiences, one can expect that the beauty direction is equally dainty. Models traipsed the runway with a no-makeup look for a fresh effect. Think of a radiant base, hints of pinks on the cheeks, and a blotted tint on the lips. As for the standout detail? Rhinestone barnacles decorated the models’ eyes— adding the right amount of sparkle when the light hit them.

Modern swan

Alice+Olivia’s Spring/Summer 2024 takes balletcore to a turn to the dark side with the modern swan eye makeup. Courtesy of Elyse Reneau, the makeup artist elevated the look with smoky siren eyes and a statement lip color. It’s also a look that is quite synonymous with Mirror Palais‘ beauty direction. With the beauty sphere’s affinity for coquette-inspired looks, it will come as no surprise if this runway entry will take over everybody’s moodboard soon.

Graphic eyeliners

Graphic eyeliners are a perennial favorite at every backstage’s beauty mood board. Take a cue from Eckhaus Latta‘s Spring/Summer 2024 presentation. Alongside the brand’s signature downtown wardrobe with skin-revealing silhouettes are the standout graphic eye makeup. Artfully done by Daniel Sallstorm, the beauty expert painted floating line work around the models’ eyes. Elsewhere, Diane Kendal’s work for the Khaite showcase unveiled a subtle version of the line work.

Berry lips

New York Fashion Week has confirmed that berry lips are not just for the fall season. At Coach’s Spring/Summer 2024 runway, Pat McGrath swiped on a darker plum lipstick shade on select models. The rich color also made an appearance in Buci’s debut runway. As for the twist? The direction’s affinity got a blurry lip finish. Pro tip: To achieve the look, focus on placing the formula in the center and blend it out towards the edges of the lips.
