The designer
Wilson Limon pursued his passion for fashion design by earning an associate’s degree from the Fashion Institute of Design and Arts. He then continued his education at Philippine Women’s College, where he obtained his bachelor’s degree. Wilson shared that his thesis project was a pivotal moment in his career because, through his work reinventing the traditional garment of the Bagobo Tagabawa, he was able to discover his unique style and create ensembles that beautifully reflect the rich cultural heritage of the Bagobo Tagabawa. Today, NIñOFRANCO is revolutionizing fashion by blending contemporary styles with traditional Mindanaoan heritage from diverse ethnolinguistic groups in the Mindanao area.
The collection
As soon as Wilson received the invitation from the Philippine Embassy, he knew that this was a great opportunity for him to showcase and honor Filipino artisanal craftsmanship on a global platform. Without hesitation, he swiftly prepared his latest fashion collection.
The 2023 Niñofranco collection is called “NINUNO,” meaning ancestor in English. Drawing inspiration from the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines, this collection blends the influence of Spanish colonialism with the unique traditions of the Mindanaoan people. Specifically, the Bagobo Tagabawa, Tboli, and Maguindanao ethnolinguistic groups are honored through the intricate designs and patterns that adorn these garments. Each piece pays homage to the clothing worn by Filipinos in the past, resulting in a breathtaking collection that celebrates the country’s vibrant history and culture. Elevating construction and layering to new heights, the use of Ikat and Inaul fabrics seen in these pieces is also truly remarkable. With exquisite detailing such as hand embroidery and beadwork, these decorative focal points add a touch of sophistication to the overall design.

NINUNO is a trilogy of collections that together tell a story of Filipino life. Starting with the Inaul pieces, crafted from Moros of Maguindanao using their traditional hand-woven textiles. Following that is a capsule collection designed in collaboration with Tagpi that is influenced by the lotus flowers of Lake Sebu. Then, the Lumad collection closes things up by showcasing the talents of the Bagobo Tagabawa and T’boli women artisans.
In addition to highlighting the excellence of Filipino craftsmanship, this also features eye-catching pieces based on classic shapes given a modern update. According to Wilson, it is a collection that draws from the best of both the past and the present.
