After all, it does give us a sense of belongingness and pride when people take a liking to our posts and stories. But sometimes, it can provide us with a false sense of reality with beauty standards.

Confidence Beyond the Frame

We are always pressured to look “perfect”. To better understand this picture-perfect idea, Merz Aesthetics® asked 4,000 people for their views on photo editing and its impact on confidence. The desire to look better is real and prevalent, and there is a struggle between having inner confidence and seeking external validation. With these findings, social media photo editing has become the norm. 

But these edits can affect our confidence and how we live. It takes strength and courage to be real.

To empower us in our quest to be our best selves, Merz Aesthetics® began uncovering the truth behind the unrealistic ideals and standards of the beauty industry. In response to the challenging beauty standards, they initiated the Merz Aesthetics Serendipity Journey® (MASJ) in 2018.

Over the years, this journey has shared inspiring stories of how people overcame their struggles and created their definitions of beauty. Furthering its goal of fueling confidence across the Asia Pacific, Merz Aesthetics® Serendipity Journey® launched the Confidence Beyond the Frame campaign to empower people to step out of societal ideals of beauty.

Social media can often set unrealistic beauty standards, but Merz Aesthetics® empower individuals to shine in their own way. Lawrence Siow, Merz Aesthetics® Asia Pacific President, discusses the major impact of social media on the medical aesthetics industry.

This campaign joins the movement to celebrate authentic beauty through a newfound confidence beyond digital screens. With this, we let our realness shine as we embark on a self-enhancement journey to become the best version of ourselves.

Embracing Individuality

Embracing our beauty begins with confidence. With the increasing societal pressure of beauty standards, Merz Aesthetics®  has collaborated with a select group of healthcare professionals to spread the MASJ message and educate people about cosmetic treatments. Called the Aesthetic Expert Panel, they are the go-to spokespeople for providing the detailed educational aspects of Merz Aesthetics®  portfolio of products in the Asia Pacific.

In the Philippines, board certified dermatologists and key experts Dr. Jonathan Yu and Dra. Gaile Robredo Vitas speak up to break the myths that come with aesthetic treatments.

Encouraging people to embrace their beauty within, Dr. Yu talks about his definition of confidence: “To me, it’s someone confident and comfortable with their beauty. They can face the world feeling confident about themselves and how people perceive them.”

The 25-year industry veteran strongly feels that medical aesthetics is an essential form of self-care and one that gives people confidence.

“They want to look better, and [they] do it [aesthetic treatment] for themselves rather than for the sake of others,” he adds. 

Meanwhile, Dr. Robredo-Vitas believes in empowering individuals to become their best and authentic selves. Setting aside unrealistic beauty standards and expectations, the skin expert has also undergone aesthetic treatments herself.

She’s selected aesthetic treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections, hyaluronic filler injections on her lips, cheeks, and temples, and Ultherapy® with visualization to address skin laxity.

Dr. Robredo-Vitas feels a little bit of pressure to upkeep her appearance, but most importantly, she says, “Like most of my colleagues, I just want to look healthy and good for my age.”

In 2022, Merz Aesthetics® commissioned a study on “Social Media’s Influence on Confidence in APAC Consumer Study” where 93% of the 4,000 people surveyed believed that aesthetic treatments will help them feel more confident.
