Pageant Season Finally Starts And Familiar Faces Vie To Become The New Titleholders

Michelle Dee, Diana Mackey and more set their eyes on the crown for Miss Universe Philippines and Binibining Pilipinas pageants this year

The Pageant world made a buzz last year with their roster of candidates as well as their social media promotions. People who were pageant aficionados and those who weren’t had both gotten to know the candidates of Miss Universe, Miss World, and Binibining Pilipinas because of the noise and public support each of the competitions received. That’s why this year, there’s a huge fascination and anticipation on who will be the next contenders to root for.

Last year, many familiar names also joined the prestigious pageants such as PBB alum and actress Kisses Delavin as well as Asia’s Next Top Model Cycle 5 winner model Maureen Wroblewitz who placed 1st runner-up in Miss Universe Philippines 2021. There were also new crowd favorites like Steffi Aberasturi who went viral initially because of her power walk in one of MUPH’s challenges, the Runway Challenge. Currently Beatrice Luigi Gomez is the reigning Miss Universe Philippines, Tracy Maureen Perez is Miss World Philippines, Hannah Arnold is Miss International Philippines and reigning queen Miss Grand International Philippines is Samantha Panlilio.

Yesterday, February 15, former Miss World Philippines 2019, Michelle Dee, not only unveiled a new look, but announced a new journey to embark on. She revealed on her instagram that she joined Miss Universe Philippines, and captioned her post, “It’s now or never,” adding the hashtags #DEEpataposanglaban and #forDEEuniverse.

The 26-year-old beauty queen said in her application video uploaded on Kumu that she knew joining a pageant would not be easy. However, she is ready to take on the challenge. “Tenacity, love for my country, and the willingness to do good with this platform is what I believe will be my greatest advantage on the Miss Universe Philippines stage,” she said.

It has also been reported that Katrina Llegado, Miss Philippines Reina Hispano Americana 2019 will join this year’s Miss Universe Philippines. Llegado and Dee’s comeback to pageantry had been much anticipated with supporters citing their winnability in global competitions.

There were also rumors that MUPH 2021 crowd favorite, Steffi Aberasturi, will also join the roster of Miss U PH candidates, but nothing is confirmed. One thing is sure for Aberasturi though–her recent engagement might signal a wedding in the future but fans would surely love to see her again on the MUPH stage before she gets married. Miss Universe Philippines also announced that they will be extending the deadline for applicants for the 2022 edition of the pageant until February 22. The application deadline was originally set on February 15. This is to give their accredited partners more time to prepare their delegates.

On the other hand, Binibining Pilipinas will start screening in March and another familiar face expressed intent on joining the pageant, former Pinoy Big Brother 2019 housemate and Miss Philippines Earth 2015 finalist Diana Mackey also announced that she plans to join the prestigious pageant. Mackey said that this time around, her goal is to the win the Bb. Pilipinas International crown.
