The series follows the story of a young mermaid named Dyesebel, based on Mars Ravelo’s comics. The iconic story of this mermaid starts when she was discovered as the lovechild of a human and a merman. And because she was able to trace her origins, the sea disowned her identity, bringing her adventure in the human world.
It was in 1953 when Dyesebel marked its first story adaptation, and Edna Luna, the original Dyesebel, portrayed the titular role. Years later, the image of Dyesebel became a Filipino cultural emblem.
In the remake that’s said to be in the works for release in 2023, Andrea Brillantes is rumored to fulfill the role of the new-age Dyesebel. Entertainment reporter and celebrity manager Ogie Diaz shared the exciting news on his YouTube channel. According to him, Andrea Brillantes is fit for the role because of her background in swimming. The host also said that Andrea is actively training as her mother is a professional diver.
Every generation has its own actress to perform the iconic role, with each one representing the mermaid tale in their respective times. Several remakes of the fantasy series made a huge splash in reality that, at one point or another, some of us have reimagined the world underwater, believing that mermaids exist.
Acting icons Vilma Santos, Alma Moreno, Alex Dixson, and Charlene Gonzales took on the character of Dyesebel in movies, while Marian Rivera and Anne Curtis were the actresses who portrayed the iconic Filipino mermaid on TV in 2008 and 2014, respectively.
