Puey Quiñones Is Back And Opens His Atelier In The Philippines

Puey Quiñones is back, better and bolder. He’s ready to give us all the drama we’ve been longing to have in our gowns.

You’ve probably heard of the Japanese adage, “fall seven times, stand up eight.” And it looks like Puey Quiñones shows us how it’s done—it was definitely not easy, but he managed to rise above. Having personally experienced some controversies in the past that truly made him fall back down, he learned that he needs to keep moving forward and rebuild his career.

Today, he has a thriving fashion design career in Los Angeles—from dressing Katy Perry in one of her music videos to dressing a few stars during the awards season. But with all of his success in the City of Angels, he still felt the need to go back to Manila.

Puey shared to MEGA, it was “two months ago my father got sick and passed away. I felt like it was my father who brought me back and guided me to open an atelier back in Manila.” And as he has also been wanting to expand his Cocomelody Bridal label in Manila, it only seemed like everything was falling into its place.

When it was finally time to expand his Los Angeles label here in the Philippines, all of his dear friends were in full support. And that’s actually one of the reasons why he wanted to expand his label in Manila. “I miss designing for my friends and loyal clients. [So] I decided to open an atelier in Manila,” he shared. We witnessed the likes of Tim Yap, Dra. Vicky Belo, and many more who were all present to watch his mini fashion show at his new atelier located in Makati.

Of course, the collection wouldn’t be complete without seeing his signature design aesthetic: monastic, dramatic, and classic combined. According to Puey, he has often been inspired by music and sculptures. “I like to listen to Michael Nyman, Philip Glass, and the work of Bernini,” he explained.

While all of his pieces right now in Manila are only made to measure, fret not, because we will be seeing his ready-to-wear line soon. Puey mentioned that his passion is still made to measure “because I love to play with draping [and] experimenting with silhouettes.” Although he has already started a few RTW pieces, and eventually he’ll launch it first in LA—so we’ll just have to wait and see for now.
