In an exclusive interview with MEGA, Filipino designer Rosbert Villar takes us into a world of peace in his latest collection
There are moments when a sense of ease and tranquility washes over us. They become a reminder of what it means to be at rest amidst the daily frenzy we get ourselves into almost every day—a simple reminder yet precious in their own way.
While it is a mere feeling, it can become a source of inspiration that creates pieces that capture a distinct fashion in a certain period of time as well as the emotional space a designer is in. And in an exclusive interview with MEGA, Filipino designer Rosbert Villar takes us into his current state of mind as he releases his new collection entitled Lightness of Being.
A state of tranquility
Clarity, serenity, and tranquility from within—these are the very essence of the collection. Just like how art puts into form an artist’s perspective with interpretations of simplistic details such as colors, forms, and texture, Rosbert translated his state of mind by utilizing light and billowy fabrics that cast a soft movement, pale and pastel hues for a refreshing vision, and delicate lines that piece together the designs.
A detail we can’t seem to let go off is his use of rosettes and pearls. He would incorporate them with such subtlety in both recent and past collections, so it was only fitting to know the concept behind the dainty appliques. He expressed that both rosettes and pearls became a sentiment symbol. The craftsmanship of the appliques displays his love for a good challenge since he makes them by hand.
Muses and new roads
Femininity has been a consistent muse for the designer. We see this in his past collections as he goes back to a familiar source of inspiration— classics twisted with modernity and the attributes of the women today.
But what makes this collection different from the others is his direction towards the unusual. Rosbert shared that this line took him to a new course as he explored new techniques—new possibilities to create something new. And while it might have been nerve-wracking for the designer, we can confidently say that the new direction never looked so good.
