Rustan’s The Beauty Source GRLPWR Event Recap: Advice Every Woman Needs To Hear

By

International Women’s Month kicked-off with the power of positivity from Marie Lozano, Pinky Webb, Janina Manipol, Nikki Huang, and Joey Mead King as they shared perspectives on womanhood in this vibrant live event

Sometimes, the best motivation to keep on pushing forward with your passions or simply going through everyday life is just having a few minutes to talk to your besties or support group. It’s that mutual understanding, overflowing positive energy, different insights and perspectives, and support that we all need sometimes. Last March 5, 2021, Rustan’s The Beauty Source held a Facebook live event that shared exactly these to motivated dream-chasers with Rustan’s Beauty Addict GRLPWR: Make It Happen. Hosted by Marie Lozano, the talk served as a vibrant and enlightening start to International Women’s Month with discussions on motivations, womanhood, style, and sensibilities.

No fear

When it comes to girl power, having a fearless attitude is key. It’s no surprise that the reputable Pinky Webb, CNN Philippines’ Senior Anchor and Correspondent, answered the call to share a few insights on career and mindset. “There are other women out there who I would describe as more fearless than me. But I think in each and every one of us, we want to be able to stand up for what is right. That’s innate in every person.” More than having a fearless attitude in the pursuit of your goals, we must acknowledge that there will always be setbacks along the way. “Do not be afraid to fail because sometimes the best stories are the ones who have actually gone through many cycles in life. Don’t lose hope. Be the best version of yourself,” Pinky shared.

A pivot in perspective

Sometimes, the path to your life-long dreams will lead you to uncharted territory. Nothing else could probably characterize the past year more for Janina Manipol than that. Just like most of us, there were a few career pivots we had to undergo throughout the recent months, with some more drastic than others. For Janina, the change couldn’t have been more drastic. “My content is mostly around travelling, but now I shifted to remote directing from home. I think everyone should learn how to move forward and adapt to what we have now.” As Janina shared, we should not let our confined circumstances define or hinder us from productivity, especially when it comes to exercising creativity. “Your greatest power is your perspective,” she shared.

Discern and decide

For excellent reflections on self-motivation and ownership, Nikki Huang was able to wow everyone in the panel. As a contributing writer for Manila Bulletin, WWF Ambassador, and Head of Communications at Mind You, Nikki wasn’t short of words for young women still searching for themselves during these times. “Appreciate every single part of your day, even the simplest activities. I think there is something we need to honor. There are things we need to enjoy better, to be present in.” Learning more about your everyday and being open to new experiences will sharpen your mind, whether as a student or a professional. As Nikki adds, “Taking your education seriously is important to being successful as a woman because you understand more about the world and know about your place in it and think critically and make good decisions for yourself.” And with these decisions, Nikki asserts that they should always enable and not restrict. As she explains, a woman’s strength comes from acknowledgement and resolve–a mental confidence that starts with yourself. “You decide your value. Don’t let others decide that for you.”

Finding purpose in your practice

Oftentimes, gathering a circle of supportive friends can give you the help you seek. But there will be moments when you just want to silence the noise and center yourself. Joey Mead King, PAWS advocate and holistic meditative enthusiast, reminds us to be in touch with ourselves. “[In meditation,] clearing your mind is quite impossible to do, but instead, get in a realm of discernment, in a realm of no judgement. If you’re feeling off, let it roll through you. If you’re feeling joy, let it rise through you. Be open to everything you are feeling.” Through turbulent times, Joey not only finds activities that bring her joy, but fulfillment as well. This is advice she wishes every woman can take with them, to find their “purpose in living”.

Be your own woman

To make it happen means reaching for success and rising through the challenges gracefully. With this band of beauties serving as inspiration to their circles, their meanings for success vary. It could be as straightforward and career-oriented as Janina shared: “Success is waking up in the morning and being happy and doing what you love. When I’m working, it doesn’t feel like work because I’m enjoying it.” However, more than ticking off boxes in your to-do list, success can also be measured through life-long control and self-worth. “Women are held up to so many standards… how they should look like and who they should be, and I think it’s important for us women to remember that our power and our success ultimately comes from being able to have agency over our lives and have a say in what we want to do and who we want to become and how to define ourselves,” shared Nikki.

In the end, celebrating womanhood should always be in the pursuit of staying grounded to your aspirations and being true to yourself. “If you have a dream, pursue them. Do not be afraid to fail because sometimes the best stories are the ones who have actually gone through many cycles in life. Don’t lose hope,” Pinky shared. Deciding your own value and not having others determine that for you will eventually lead to loving yourself. Leaving viewers with something to ponder on, Joey asked: “Would you marry you? What is it about you that you want to marry and be with forever?”
