Saint Laurent recently revealed their Spring 2023 Ready-to-wear collection showcasing a number of long fluid dresses, and maxi bold shouldered coats.
Movement and dance were the source of inspiration for Saint Laurent’s Creative Director, Anthony Vaccarello. He took to Martha Graham, esteemed American modern dancer and choreographer, as the basis for his work for Spring 2023. Vacarello’s love for powerful silhouettes and unapologetic sense of style mixed well with Graham’s impactful movements in contrast to languid poses. On top of this, the dancer often wore long fluid-like dresses for her shows, which was reimagined by Vaccarello for Saint Laurent.
In the 49 piece collection, we were introduced to the house’s direction for the upcoming Spring season. There was look after look of long jersey dresses paired with leather coats and other accessories. Some of the looks were made of other materials, such as mesh or silk, while others were made into pants. Nevertheless, there were no knees in sight. All the pieces were done with a long hemline.
Another interesting design element to Vaccarello’s newest collection was his homage to YSL’s past. The dresses were either hooded, draped, or with a capuche neckline. This dates back to Saint Laurent in the mid 1980s where they first debuted these styles for the French fashion house.
Aside from this, we saw signature drapings for the dresses and pants at the latter part of the show. The fluidity of the silhouettes in contrast to the strong accessories and shoes used showcases Vaccarello’s knack for balance in all his work. This includes the color choices and the marketability of the garments to YSL’s cool clientele. Everything was considered during the creation of their inventive take for Spring 2023.
