The Saint Laurent Summer 2023 Collection is an Homage and Reinvention of the House’s Heritage

A profound history and a vision for the future, Saint Laurent’s Summer 2023 Fashion Collection exemplified the essence of Paris in a cinematic scale

Under the romantic breeze of a Parisian night, a sophisticated yet charged energy hung in the air. Saint Laurent ceremoniously unveiled their Summer 2023 collection that is both a celebration of the past and an innovation for a new generation. Sensuality personified, the quintessential fashion house showcased a striking marriage between sultry and barely-there silhouettes with exaggerated and masculine shapes. Effortless glamor and radical fluidity truly defined the collection as it gave the fashion event a dreamlike ambiance under the French sky.

With a color palette of rich and deep tones, sultry and sophisticated with a hint of minimalism and effortlessness defined the whole collection.

With the genius of Saint Laurent’s creative director Anthony Vaccarello once again in play, the  collection took inspiration from the tubular sheath worn by Martha Graham for her choreography of Lamentation in 1930. Although the profound tubular garment that enveloped the body from head-to-toe became the starting point of this collection, its notable impact was reprised in various Saint Laurent collections throughout the decades. From the delicate hooded chiffon dresses in 1969, the Spring Summer Haute Couture in 1985, to the Fall Winter Haute Couture 2002, the founder’s, Yves Saint Laurent himself, last show.

Vacarrello reintroduced Saint Laurent’s key motif of sensual columnal silhouettes that also referenced the house’s hooded pieced from the 80s

Those themes of ease and elegance, particularly the house’s hooded “capuche” pieces from the mid-1980s, paired with last season’s refined and elongated silhouettes were referenced by Vaccarello for his Summer 2023 collection. An acknowledging nod to vintage styles yet a reinvention for a new age, the director made sure to incorporate Saint Laurent’s key motif while also adding his own signature style.

The themes of relaxed shapes juxtaposed with strong shoulders ran throughout the various pieces in the collection

Sultry floor-length dresses made with silk jersey knits were the heart of the collection. The sexy sophistication was contrasted with masculine outerwear, namely wool coats with strong exaggerated shoulders, engulfing trenches, and leather bombers. The collection also featured pajama-inspired satin pieces seen in the sheer tank dress along with cashmere pants that further embodied the themes of refined effortlessness contrasted by the strong lines of sculptural wood and glimmering gold jewelry.
