One of the undeniable repercussions brought by COVID-19 are the restrictions on travel. Many, if not all, struggle with sating their wanderlust in this pandemic-ridden landscape. But what if there was a way to explore the world without leaving your home? The virtual event, “Art + Design”, offered that very experience to its bidders and visitors alike.

It was carried out by Salcedo Auctions’ subsidiary, Gavel&Block last February 5. This event was part of the main house’s first campaign for the year called “The Worlds We Create”. The promotion’s mission was to meet today’s reality—where more and more people get in the habit of adorning and transforming their spaces with objects that inspire and nurture.

The auction house’s first 2022 sale was filled to the brim with luxurious pieces that appealed to art fanatics, antique collectors and vintage enthusiasts. There was truly something for everyone in the well-curated diverse array of lots.

Here’s a quick rundown of the spectacular collections gushed and bid over during the “Art + Design” auction by Gavel&Block.

Orient Express

This collection was inspired by the luxe transcontinental railway service that’s been revamped by Milan-based Dimorestudio. By its launch in 2023, the famed train’s transformed interiors will sport 50s to 70s references that allude to Italian design’s golden age. As described by founding members of Dimorestudio, Emiliano Salci and Britt Moran, the motif married both the old and the new while maintaining the train’s nomadic spirit.

With the service being back on track soon, it is only fitting that it debuts with a new name—Orient Express La Dolce Vita

The curated items paid close attention to the Orient Express’ aesthetic. Hence, you’ll be greeted with wares that center around elements like wood and styles that patronized the zeitgeist of old decades.

Pop Phenomenon

Each piece easily brought a burst of color to a space’s character. Every article embraced pop motifs that conjured a sense of joy and levity. It’s impossible not to get into a lighthearted mood when in sight of these items. With these decorations, one’s space will surely look fresh and light.

A Man’s World

If your man cave sought out some much-needed revamping, this collection was the way to go. Availing of these meant that you get to decorate your area and truly make it your own by surrounding yourself with objects and designs that speak to your adventurous side. These were also fitting for those who have an affinity for vintage or old Filipino aesthetics. The lots’ palette patronized mostly vintage brown hues.

Masters Series

Gavel & Block’s first edition of the series showcased the works of a long line of Philippine Masters. From award-winning Filipino cartoonist, Malang, to abstract pieces by the country’s National Artist in the visual arts, H.R. Ocampo

Art enthusiasts took delight in sight-for-sore-eyes pieces that celebrated different mediums and styles. To delve deeper, “Art + Design” by Gavel&Block explored the likes of lithography, watercolor, print and ink on paper among the many techniques featured.

Femme Fatale

Here, the Filipina face and form took center stage. Also gracing the platform were pieces that embraced the beauty of many pop culture and high fashion house’s iconic muses, including the renowned Marilyn Monroe. One could have also viewed the curated pieces as a celebration of womanhood.

If you missed the “Art + Design” by Gavel&Block, there’s no need to fret! You can look forward to an even grander event come March 12 of this year, the Salcedo Auctions’ Important Philippine Art Sale. Consignments are still being accepted up to February 12.
