Sam YG shares his style tips on mastering the art of mixing and matching, emphasizing versatility and personality in fashion.
Sam YG is an adrenaline junkie, no doubt. From snippets and slices of life on his Instagram feed or the way he dresses, there is that unmistakable thirst for adventure that jumps off at you. Whether riding his Ducati along the metropolis or testing out the latest Ford Ranger in the Australian outback, he claims that there will always be a 60% chance that you will see him wearing denim jeans, biker jacket and a good pair of boots.
Even if he consistently gravitates to anything and everything comfortable, Sam YG still makes sure that whatever he wears will represent who he is and the things that he values. He believes that choosing your outfit is about “getting your own personality and own style out there through what you wear and how you dress. It is creating your own character and image without saying a word.”
His daily schedule constantly requires him to change from one look to another has taught him the essence of versatility when it comes to dressing up. “It allows you to change your style very quick,” he explains, adding that the essential clothing will always make your life easier. Sam YG suggests that if you are always on-the-go, it is very important to have a few good pair of jeans in neutral colors. “Invest on plains and a good pair of jeans, because you can mix a match a lot of tops with it already,” he shares. “You can go a bit smarter by just wearing a polo or do layering.
But aside from wearing casual versatile clothes, Sam YG’s style can also jump from laid-back to dapper. On weekends when he hosts live events, he always draws inspiration from the ever sophisticated super spy, Bond—James Bond.
With an average of 22 sets of suits in high rotation every two months, Sam YG also does a lot of mixing and matching when it comes to dressing up, emphasizing that small details can easily elevate a look look. “Let’s say a pocket square, like you’re wearing a black suit, a blue or red pocket square could just totally change how you look,” he says.
By learning the art of mixing and matching, Sam YG gives us a perspective that you do not need a snazzy suit or jacket to stand out from the crowd. He shares that the reason why he is a staunch Paul Smith fan is because of “how [Paul Smith] gets playful but sakto lang,” he reasons. “It does not look too crazy na parang look-at-me, pero may dating.” Following the Sam YG credo, all you need to do is be true to yourself and evoke your own unique personality with your sense of fashion.
