Old School Love: How Are Showbiz’s Most Nostalgic Love Teams Doing Now?

By

Before the dawn of today’s showbiz couples like Jadine, Lizquen, and Kathniel, these nostalgic pairings ruled the screens and captured the hearts of their fans from years ago.

Before the terms ‘stan’, ‘ship’, and ‘fandom’ made their way to the public vocabulary, these celebs definitely took the throne and paved the way.

Before social media, the only way to catch up with them was just through their kilig-worthy films. Fret not, as we’ve now gathered all the iconic love teams from the past – and how they’re doing now.

Bea Alonzo & John Lloyd Cruz

Who could forget this sweet pair? With titles like Miss You Like Crazy, Now That I Have You, One More Chance, and so much more, these two were truly the gold standard for Filipino cinema pairings. If we had social media during their time, they would definitely top the trending charts!

Bea recently revealed with MEGA Entertainment that she had feelings for John Lloyd during their filmings, going as far as believing that they were actually together.

“Hindi ko alam kung saan ‘yun natapos and then naging friends na kami. Alam mo yung ganito sya eh, yung love nagta-transition siya into different forms. The love has always been there,” Bea shared with MEGA Entertainment editor, G3 San Diego.

With Bea recently signing on to GMA-7, a reunion (film or otherwise) is definitely possible for the pair.

Kristine Hermosa & Jericho Rosales

There’s nothing quite like the sweet innocence of the Kristine x Jericho tandem! As the two lifted each other up during multiple projects like Pangako Sa’yo and the iconic Forevermore teleserye, it’s no question that they were the original reel-to-real couple of the early 2000s.

The two are now living peacefully with their respective partners, though they have recently reunited in the ABS-CBN series Dahil May Isang Ikaw.

Jolina Magdangal & Marvin Agustin

All hail the ultimate 90s teenybopper couple! There’s just something about the Jolina and Marvin pairing that made all of us root for them – especially during the 1998 film Labs Kita Okay Ka Lang.

Remember that “Oh, yes kaibigan mo ‘ko. Kaibigan mo lang ako” line? Apparently, Jolina actually took those lines to heart as she had feelings for her co-star at the time.

“Yung time na yon, iyon talaga ang nararamdaman ko kay Marvin. Yung ‘kaibigan, kaibigan mo lang talaga ko and I’m so stupid.’ Ayon yung moment na ‘yon,” Jolina shared during a podcast with director Antoinette Jadaone and Juan Miguel Severo.

On the other hand, Marvin shared that it was Jolina who ‘friendzoned’ him.

During a shared Instagram Live, Marvin was asked why they never got together despite the obvious chemistry. To which he answered, “na-friendzone ako eh. Hindi ko pa po nalalabas ‘yung side ng story ko kasi wala pang ‘The Buzz.’ Kapag nagbukas po ang ‘The Buzz,’ ako ang unang guest.

Bad timing or just a trick of fate? Either way, Jolina is now married to musician Mark Escueta while Marvin has been keeping his relationship score private.

Angel Locsin & Richard Gutierrez

With films like I Will Always Love You, Let The Love Begin, and the 200s hit Mulawin under their belt, Angel and Richard definitely were one of the most iconic lowkey love teams of the 2000s. With a shared start in showbiz and one year age gap between them, it’s no wonder that they’re still on good terms up to this day.

In a May 2020 video call conversation for Regal Films’ ‘Regal Movies At Home’, the friends discussed working their craft amid the pandemic, family matters, and love.

When asked if she would like to reunite with Richard in the future, Locsin had nothing but good words.

Judy Ann Santos & Piolo Pascual

A box-office powerhouse couple through and through, Juday and Piolo broke records with projects like Don’t Give Up On, ‘Til There Was You, and Kahit Isang Saglit.

A reunion film was set for the 2000s love team, but it was halted amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, the two have expressed nothing but support and love for each other through the years.

“[Judy Ann] a big part of my career,” Piolo shared during a life insurance event that they’re both endorses for. “We did a lot of movies and TV shows together. Napakalaki ng utang na loob ko kay Juday.”

Likewise, Judy Anne said that she’s just waiting for the right moment to get their reunion project started: “Siguro ‘pag may vaccine na at pwede nang lumabas lahat ng tao siguro matutuloy na s’ya.

Marian Rivera & Dingdong Dantes

Here’s a couple that’s still making us swoon to this day! After meeting at the set of Marimar, Marian and Dingdong weren’t just hailed the ultimate love team of 2005, but they’ve been inseparable ever since.

Since then, everything the couple touched turned to gold. With projects like Dyesebel and Endless Love further skyrocketing their fame and proving their undeniable chemistry, Dongyan only grew stronger with time.

Now the two are celebrating six years of marriage together while raising their two lovely children, Zia and Sixto (Ziggy). Truly a golden pair.

Claudine Barretto & Rico Yan

There’s quite nothing as bittersweet as the Claudine and Rico love story. More than a celebrity pairing, the two lovebirds were each other’s young love through projects like Dahil Mahal Na Mahal Kita and Got 2 Believe. With their matching smiles and clear affection for each other, anyone could see that it was a match made in paradise.

But Rico’s sudden death in March of 2002 broke the showbiz world and forever affected Claudine. He died in his sleep from acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis at only 27.

19 years later, Claudine knows that that kind of love never goes away.

Mahal ko pa rin siya. Hindi nawawala ‘yon. I think hindi nawawala [love] kapag namatay na ‘yung tao,” the actress shared during a vlog with friend and TV host, Janelle Jamer.

Keeping true to her word, she also celebrated Rico’s 46th birthday this March 16.
