SoFA Graduation Show 2024: The Futuristic Innovators

By

For these SoFA graduates, boundaries are conventions, allowing them to destroy these barriers to fully realize their potential for the future

Boundaries are not immutable barriers, but rather invitations to explore and redefine. In truth, they are societal constructs, arbitrary lines drawn to delineate and separate. Boundaries are conventions, but our convictions are boundless. It’s this relentless pursuit of growth, the courage to challenge norms, the determination to confront adversity, and the wisdom found in moments of quiet introspection. These Futuristic Innovators from SoFA’s graduating batch of 2024 boldly confront the limitations of existence, viewing them not as obstacles, but as opportunities for liberation and self-discovery.

Emir Loresto

Emir Loresto’s collection is a testament on how clothing can be used as a personal armor

The strongest armor can be the one we build around our hearts. Emir Loresto’s “Armored Heart” collection is where vulnerability meets resilience in hues of navy, neon green, and white. Loresto’s designs stand as bastions of self-preservation in the face of life’s trials. Each piece is a fortitude found in erecting barriers around one’s innermost self, showcasing the power of protection in guarding against potential harm.

John Valenzuela

John Valenzuela’s collection takes inpiration from the art of origami to create dynamic silhouettes

Movement is life. In John Valenzuela’s collection, aptly named “Perpetua,” he encapsulates the essence of determination and perseverance. With a palette of orange, gray, and cream, Valenzuela’s creations symbolize the pursuit of inner peace. Through texture-heavy ensembles, he narrates the story of embracing brokenness and finding wholeness in perpetual adaptation and growth.

Kayla Flores

Kayla Flores explores the broad spectrum of sexuality through her collection

Kayla Flores is between, among, in the midst. In her collection, “INTER”, she boldly explores themes of sexual identity. Through intricate textures and crochet work, Flores celebrates the multifaceted nature of individuality and bisexuality. Her pieces serve as a powerful expression of embracing authenticity and breaking free from the shackles of fear and societal invalidation.

Hannah Tapawan

Hannah Tapawan’s designs conveys a story about the resilience needed in mothehood

Motherhood is not black-and-white. Hannah Tapawan’s collection, “Unveiled,” focuses on the theme of sacrifice. Tapawan’s designs, drawing inspiration from the resilience of motherhood, embody an aesthetic characterized by nuanced shades of gray through the stark contrasts of mothers’ challenges. Each piece represents a mother’s courageous decision to endure agony for the sake of her child, expressing unshakable love and dedication. A wilted flower is just as beautiful as any other bloom, and it’s even more fitting given the courage she carries through combat.

Nicole Phillipe

Nicole Phillipe hopes that her collection will encourage individuals to embrace and express themselve freely through clothing

Sometimes we need an escape. Nicole Phillipe’s collection, “Escapism,” pays homage to the vibrant nightlife scene and the sense of belonging found in underground communities. With a nod to rave culture and club aesthetics, Phillipe’s designs capture the euphoria of living in the moment and finding sanctuary in the self. Through her creations, she invites us to embrace the liberating power of collective experience.

Stephanie Satorre

For Stephanie Satorre the biggest inspiration for collection is every man’s best friend—dogs.

When we prefer the company of animals, that often says a lot about the perspectives of humanity. Stephanie Satorre, in her collection “Canine”, celebrates the timeless bond between humans and their loyal companions. With a palette of neutral colors, Satorre’s designs pay homage to the protective and companionable qualities of dogs—especially her dogs; around 20 of them, naturally. Her pieces serve as a reflection of her personality, where the unconditional love of these animals has shaped her into a person of warmth and approachability.

These Futuristic Innovators—Emir Loresto, John Valenzuela, Kayla Flores, Hannah Tapawan, Nicole Phillipe, and Stephanie Satorre—have embraced the challenge of pushing boundaries. They have redefined their creativity and explored a myriad of ways to further elevate themselves to a standard they view as only limitless.
