Archival fashion, ageless style, and coming full circle—Tessie Singson is the true epitome of fashion that knows no bounds

This is an excerpt from MEGA’s October 2023 Stylephile

Here’s proof that quirky, unconventional fashion is a statement for everyone. But, some people just do it better—just like Tessie Singson.

Since retiring almost five years ago, Singson has devoted most of her time to her family. When she’s not busy managing the household, she still enjoys pampering herself and getting dolled up before running errands.

“I believe in consuming less, investing in quality pieces that would last, mixing it with affordable basics, and elevating your look with the right accessories and a positive attitude,” Singson says.

Less is more—she simply believes in investing on things that would last, on pieces that can be passed on rather than in impulse buying and trendy fashion. With her and her son JP’s appreciation for good design, they champion fashion archival pieces and advocate for a circular economy.

STYLE TALKS

Can you tell us about the exact moment you first fell in love with fashion? Who is your style inspiration and how did they influence your current style?

Actually, I came from humble beginnings and grew up with three butch brothers. Since I was the only rose among the thorns, it was no surprise that my mom would dress me up in cute outfits for special occasions. Then, eventually, when my parents migrated to the U.S., they would regularly send us balikbayan boxes full of personal care stuff, including Esprit, Lacoste, Guess, Levi’s, and fashion magazines. This was how I started learning about fashion since there was no internet at that time.

Did your style change drastically over the years? How would you describe your own style now?

Drastically. I’m more unapologetically fearless, experimental, and adventurous now. I’m more comfortable in my own skin. I have come to terms with my personal style. I don’t feel the need to look like everybody else or dress my age. I am me.

If you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? What’s your ultimate closet staple?

Oh gosh, that’s a hard one! It’s because clothing is an extension of one’s personality. But if I have to choose, then I’d pick a basic shirt and a statement skirt. I love mixing something simple with something unique, and then accentuating it with the right accessories.
