Drama, Crisis, And A Royal Affair, These Are What To Expect And More On The Crown

By

Netflix has revealed the trailer of the third season of hit drama series, The Crown and we’re expecting major changes, new revelations, and answers to our most pressing questions.

In the two-minute preview, it teases a significant change in times as Queen Elizabeth approaches her Silver Jubilee. As her family struggles to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing Britain, she continues to face the tensions of her nation’s crisis, family affairs, and as usual, inner politics in Buckingham Palace.

From cold-war paranoia, through to the jet-set and the space age–the exuberance of the 1960s and the long hangover of the 1970s–Elizabeth and the Royals must adapt to a new, more liberated, but also more turbulent world.

Here’s what you should expect in the upcoming season of The Crown:

Times are a-changin’ and so is the cast

It will be a full-cast evolution as every two seasons of The Crown follows an era of Queen Elizabeth II’s life and her reign as the Queen of the United Kingdom. Season 3 and 4 will revolve around 1964-1976; 25 years since her accession.

The former cast will be taken over by big names with undoubtedly moving performances, starting with Oscar-winning actress, Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth, Helena Bonham-Carter as Princess Margaret, Tobias Menzies as The Duke of Edinburgh, Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles, Erin Doherty as Princess Anne, Ben Daniels as Lord Snowdon, Jason Watkins as Prime Minister Harold Wilson, and Charles Dance as Lord Mountbatten.

The Aberfan disaster of 1966?

The trailer teases some historic events, including one of the United Kingdom’s worst mining disasters in history, The Aberfan Disaster. The mining disaster killed hundreds of children on October 21, 1966, when coal waste situated on the hill atop Pantlas Junior School liquefied into a thick slurry and began falling over the village, killing 144 people–mostly children.

Historically, Queen Elizabeth II sparked criticism from the public when she initially refused to visit the village after the calamity happened.

The start of Prince Charles’ romance with Camilla Shand?

In 1970, approximately 11 years before Prince Charles proposed to Princess Diana, he met Camilla Parker Bowles (née Shand) and had a short-lived romance. Emerald Fennell will take on the role of Camilla Shand.

More family conflicts

It looks like it’s not just Princess Margaret clashing with the queen this time around. A grown-up Prince Charles will also have problems with his relatives.

“Am I listened to in the family? Am I seen for who and what I am? No,” he snaps at his mother.

But in the trailer, the Queen continues to put her duty above everything else, replying, “We have all made sacrifices and suppressed who we are. It is not a choice. It is a duty.”

Margaret Thatcher

While it was announced that Gillian Anderson will be appearing on Season 4 to take on the role of Margaret Thatcher, we’re still expecting a build-up to her inevitable appearance.

In a statement posted to the show’s social media, Gillian Anderson expressed her excitement to join the cast and crew of The Crown. She says, “Thatcher was undoubtedly formidable, but I am relishing exploring beneath the surface, and, dare I say, falling in love with the icon who, whether loved or despised, defined an era.”

Written by Peter Morgan, The Crown Season 3 will be streaming on Netflix on Sunday, November 17.
