Playful Icons, Timeless Craft
The Louis Vuitton x Murakami collection was a groundbreaking fusion of Murakami’s colorful Superflat aesthetic and Louis Vuitton’s enduring craftsmanship. Two decades ago, Murakami’s playful motifs—including pandas, smiley flowers, and iconic Monogram reimaginings—captured the essence of pop culture, setting a new look in the art and fashion worlds. The 2025 re-edition, with a campaign fronted by Zendaya and shot by Dutch photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, pays homage to this original vision while utilizing cutting-edge technology to enhance the vividness and precision of these designs.
Comprising over 200 creations, this collection reintroduces Louis Vuitton’s classic Monogram, elevated through Murakami’s whimsical, yet profound, character-driven artwork. Featured across an array of products—from leather goods to perfumes—Murakami’s motifs remain as relevant and influential as ever, cementing his place as a cultural touchstone. The collection includes reimagined versions of the Monogram Multicolore, Superflat Panda, and Cherry Blossom, which have become emblematic of the collection’s success.
Louis Vuitton has also enlisted top Asian personalities to showcase their take on the new pieces. The lineup includes Niana Guerrero, Cris Horwang, Tansuan, Ruby Lyn, Violette Wautier, and SEVENTEEN’s Hoshi, all featured in a hazy, 2003-inspired aesthetic.
A Global Exploration
Louis Vuitton’s re-edition of Murakami’s work elevates the shopping experience into an immersive exploration of creativity. Celebrating the collection’s launch, the House is bringing Murakami’s universe to life with pop-up exhibitions across seven global cities: London, Milan, New York, Seoul, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Singapore. These pop-ups are cultural hubs designed to platform the joyous legacy of the Louis Vuitton x Murakami collection.
The pop-up locations feature a modular design inspired by Tokyo’s minimalist hotels. Within these spaces, visitors are invited to step into four distinct zones—each designed to elevate different aspects of the Louis Vuitton x Murakami world.
The milestone is further launched with Chapter One of their 2025 re-edition collection. This reissue brings new life to beloved motifs such as the Monogram Multicolore and the Superflat Panda. From the Monogram Multicolore applied to a range of bags, trunks, and accessories, to the whimsical Superflat Panda featured on travel bags and keyrings, the collection reintroduces Murakami’s characters across 170 creations. Chapter Two will be launched in March 2025 and focus on the artist’s Cherry Blossom pattern.
Retail Space
At the core of the pop-up is the Retail Space, where visitors can purchase exclusive Louis Vuitton x Murakami items. Each purchase comes with a special token, presenting shoppers the chance to win limited-edition gifts through a vending machine—such as custom stickers, collectible trading cards, and a Takashi Murakami Flower Go Walk portable game. This interactive element allows customers to engage with the House in a fun way, ensuring that each visit is memorable.
Cinema
The Cinema zone takes visitors deeper into Murakami’s imaginative world with two remastered films: Superflat Monogram (2003) and Superflat First Love (2009). These animated projects, originally created for the collection, are re-released as part of the 20-year celebration. The Superflat Monogram film is a retelling of Alice in Wonderland, transposed into the whimsical world of Louis Vuitton. Superflat First Love follows the story of Aya, from the first film who reenters the world of Louis Vuitton, encountering Murakami’s iconic characters in Paris.
Care Station
The Care Station offers a unique service for owners of Louis Vuitton x Murakami products. This dedicated repair and maintenance service for archival pieces from the original collection allows customers to watch Louis Vuitton artisans perform the delicate restoration work on-site. In cleaning, replacing parts, or restoring paint, the Care Station offers a hands-on approach to preserving Murakami’s masterpieces, giving clients a direct connection to the craftsmanship behind their products.
Café
Visitors can relax and enjoy beverages at the Café, which is designed to reflect Murakami’s signature style, complete with flower-patterned cushions and limited-edition Superflat Panda cups. From coffee lattes to lemonade, each beverage is served with a special cookie inspired by the Superflat Garden’s smiley flower motif.
A Pop-Up in Multiple Points
The global pop-ups serve as a monument to the cultural effect of art and fashion in contemporary times. Louis Vuitton and Murakami illustrate that exceptional collaborations can alter entire eras. Regardless of expressive design, immersive experiences, or unexpected creative relationships, this association has defined luxury fashion and pop culture over the last two decades. And the re-edition shows no signs of slowing down. The Louis Vuitton x Murakami re-edition collection reminds us that great design evolves from multiple viewpoints while maintaining the spirit that made it a cultural phenomenon in the first place.
