The Met Gala Trends We Predicted and the Ones We Didn’t Expect

By

Just last week, we released a list of trends that we knew would make an appearance at the Met Gala. These trends were based on Karl Lagerfeld’s most beloved details that he often used in his designs from 1983 up until his last collection in 2019. In his own creative identity, he was able to revive the house codes of Chanel with modernization that are still making waves to this day.

However, it wasn’t just the ones we mentioned that made such appearances. Here’s a list of the trends we got correctly and the ones we did not expect to see on the steps of the Met.

What we saw coming

Pearls

While pearls were very much loved before Karl Lagerfeld incorporated it in his designs, it was definitely him who amplified it even more. This is why it’s fitting to see them make an appearance at the Met Gala with different iterations like Kim Kardashian’s Schiaparelli piece that had pearls hanging on her bodice and skirt, while Phoebe Bridgers had white pearls decorating her Tory Burch dress.

Tweeds

The signature material was definitely the top pick for this year’s Met Gala. If Karl Lagerfeld revived the fabric in his creative way, personalities showed up in tweed that had their own twist. Keke Palmer was seen in a pastel tweed dress by Sergio Hudson, and Dua Lipa paid tribute to Karl by wearing a vintage tweed Chanel wedding dress from 1992.

Appliqués

Appliqués were Karl’s favorite detailing in his designs. We saw it in his use of bows, feathers, and most especially, the Camellia flower. Most of them made an appearance at the gala, such as Adut Akech’s black and white gown by Carolina Herrera that had sequins decorating the bodice and rosettes at the tiered skirt. Meanwhile, the new face of Coco Mademoiselle, Whitney Peak, sported a Chanel Fall/Winter 2021 piece that had white rosettes on the bodice.

Punk Chanel

We labeled it as Edwardian rock and roll, both giving off the same vibe of punk rock chic. This style of Karl Lagerfeld had its time during the 90s and we’re seeing it once again as Gigi Hadid came in wearing a custom Givenchy piece, which featured a black corset peeping through the black sheer lace, draped from her shoulders down to the hem. On the other hand, Billie Eilish went for the same all-black motif with her custom Simon Rocha dress featuring a bustier layered with sheer black lace.

What we did not expect

Reinterpreted suits

Although suit coordinates were Karl Lagerfeld’s top ensembles in his designs, we weren’t expecting an exaggerated type of interpretation. Korean model Sora Choi arrived at the steps wearing a custom Thom Browne ensemble that put tweed in a new perspective as her suit was wrapped around a huge tweed coat structured like a skirt. Meanwhile, nother Thom Browne piece was worn by Janelle Monae, a dramatized black and white coat finished in an A-line silhouette, which can be removed to show the hoop skirt and sparkling bikini coordinates she wore underneath.

Puffed skirts

Given that it’s the Met Gala, it’s safe to assume that classic silhouettes will be done in various forms. One example is the ball gown skirt as seen on Cardi B, which had large black velvet rosettes around the piece, designed by Chengpeng Studio. Another skirt we’re taking note of is Jenna Ortega’s mini skirt and train that was finished with tiers of tweeds and gold chains—a piece by Thom Browne.

Headpieces

Karl Lagerfeld had an affinity for both classic and contemporary headpieces that he often used in his collections, and some celebrities had their own interpretations of this little detail. The ever-so-dainty Elle Fanning decided to wear a headpiece that had daisies on the front and bows on the side, which was a nod to one of her early memories with the late designer. For an edgy look, Tems had her black feathered headpiece in a curved out structure.
