The A-listers who honored Karl Lagerfeld by wearing his archival pieces during his time in Chanel
This year’s Met Gala theme centered around an iconic late designer that modernized and revived a well-beloved French house—Chanel. His reign in 1983 created quite the stir in the fashion industry, with his eye for femininity and playful style. He continued on with this design identity up until his last collection in 2019, which he unfortunately did not reach to watch himself.

The 2023 Met Gala is a love letter to Karl Lagerfeld as fashion’s most anticipated event commemorates his influence in the industry by appearing in pieces inspired by him and his work. And while some were done with such distinctive styles, there were others who opted to honor him by wearing an archival piece that Karl Lagerfeld himself designed.
Dua Lipa in Vintage Chanel FW92 Couture Collection
She was one of the first to arrive amongst her fellow co-chair committee members, and Dua Lipa’s look goes beyond the theme. She honored the late designer by wearing a vintage Chanel piece from their Fall/Winter 1994 Haute Couture collection, channeling the Chanel bride like Claudia Schiffer did on the runway.
Gisele Bündchen in Vintage Chanel SS07 Couture Collection
The Brazilian model went big for the Met Gala ensemble by wearing a white silk dress with sequins decorating the white panels, creating an elegant fall on her figure. She then layered it with a billowed out cape that featured feathers and camellia flowers from top to bottom. Both are vintage pieces of Chanel.
Naomi Campbell in Vintage Chanel SS10 Couture Collection
She has been with Karl Lagerfeld during the pinnacle of her modeling career in the 90s, so it was only fitting that Naomi honor her friend by wearing a piece from his Spring/Summer 2010 collection. It had a molten feel to it as the pink satin draped from her shoulder to her waist and the hem. Silver trimmings were seen peeping on the bodice and the skirt for a gleaming detail.
Jennie in Vintage Chanel FW1990
The Korean pop star makes her Met Gala debut in a vintage Chanel piece, making it extra special for the global ambassador. It was all things dainty and sweet with her white minidress that had a white rosette and black bow at the bust, and the overall look was finished with a tiered skirt at the bottom.
Nicole Kidman in Vintage Chanel 2004
Though it wasn’t presented on the runway, Nicole Kidman’s piece was actually designed for her Chanel No.5 commercial back in 2004. Her pink tulle dress was embellished with sequins on the bodice while the skirt had 250 pink feathers on it.
