Kiss these trends with big lips—or leave them to the dust. At Paris Fashion Week Men’s Fall/Winter 2024 shows, men see through sheer, prefer bold red, and love oversized everything. Will the Filipino man follow? Time will tell, and in the world of trends and influence, it’s only a matter of time until it’s here.

Sheer through

It was as if shirts did not exist. At Paris Fashion Week, it definitely didn’t. If the previous season led moving through life sans trousers, we may as well take our shirts off, too. The economy is too heavy now anyway.

Loewe FW24

Loewe opted for no shirts, complemented only with leather everything. Dior took over a metal-like shirt that entrapped the wearer, stylishly protected by pearls. Ami shows off more muscle in sheer.

Red hot

Color is one way to exude emotion, and red? Red is the most passionate. The Parisian runway becomes red hot as designers integrate the color in as this ravishing hue asserts its dominance in conventional and unconventional silhouettes and styles. Next season, be prepared to blush with red.

Valentino goes cherry red in one of the only looks that combats the sky blue color it’s pushing for. Wales Bonner surprises in red boots. Balmain gets a sultry kiss from giant lips.

Check, please

Prints can overwhelm, especially if scatteringly used. Sometimes it doesn’t work, other times it does—like one where there is a pattern. Checkered, plaid, tartan, or quilt, these certain prints at least soften the eye. With men’s fashion adapting at a fast pace, a streamlined print can be necessary.

Louis Vuitton FW24

Louis Vuitton travels to the West where Pharrell Williams adds plaid to several garments and monogram speedys—suitable for horses, too. Ernest W. Baker gambles in the casino to a 70s-punk, sleek aesthetic. Class is in session as  Kenzo creative director Nigo presented checkered prints that reference school uniforms.

Bigger is better

Is bigger always better? Science and technology have allowed people to view art in many different ways. After all, what can’t A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) do? Alas, that’s the digital world, where V.R. (Virtual Reality) is still very much in its infancy. In this case, real life is all the better. Therefore, so is bigger.

Bluemarble FW24

Filipino designer Anthony Alvarez gets inspiration from the 1979 film, Perfumed Nightmare, about a jeepney driver inspired by the American dream that he goes off the rails; of course, Alvarez gives Bluemarble a fuzzy makeover with oversized headpieces. Balmain has an embellished face on the trench coat—no jewelry needed. Rick Owens emphasizes mass luxury, with an emphasis on oversized rubber boots.

Femininity, fluidity, and freedom

There’s a softness to the man. The flow of influence has changed. For years, women have been adjusting to men: structured, stiff, shifted. These days, menswear is not only looked to be soft and flowy, but made in gentler fabrics through couture practices. The line dares to be blurred, where balance is almost not needed anymore.

Dior FW24

Dior presents a collection that goes hardcore ballet-core: modernized, streamlined, and cut, complete with ballet shoes. Marine Serre adds skirts and dresses to its lineup. Issey Miyake takes its beautiful pleats, layered in a dress, and gives it to man.

As Paris Fashion Week Men’s Fall/Winter 2024 wraps up with a collection of new trends to follow, it’s time to reflect on whether we want to embrace them welcomingly or kiss them goodbye. From the audacious sheer ensembles to the passionate red palette, the checkered prints balancing boldness with subtlety, the mantra that “bigger is better,” and the evolving narrative of femininity, these trends have sparked conversations and redefined boundaries. It pushes us to think of what it means to be stylishly bold and unapologetically confident.
