Reintroducing the subversive makeup application with a soft focus filter-like finish
It’s forecasted that a slew of age-old favorites is expected to circle back to the new age of beauty, and one of them is the underpainting method. The makeup technique recently re-entered the mainstream narrative when Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber’s makeup artist, Mary Philips, revealed that it’s her best-kept bronzer secret for their signature softly-sculpted complexion. And from then, it became a phenomenon.
In beautytok, fans showcased how easy it is to incorporate the technique into any routine. Threads such as #maryphilipshack garnered 1.7 million views while #underpaintingmakeup collected 943.3 thousand views. And while the subversive makeup application has been around for decades, its revival proves that it is versatile enough to stand the test of time.
The underpainting method
“It’s like laying down the bones under the skin,” Mary Philips described the technique in her newly posted video with 1.6 million views. In her tutorial, the artist used a foundation brush to contour key points. Once buffed and blended, she swept an illuminating formula to clean the edges of the contoured area then proceeded to apply concealer under her eye. Mary Philips made sure that everything was blended to perfection before she layered it with a lightweight foundation. The artist completed the look with a swish of bronzer and blush.

The blush method
It’s not the first time underpainting hinted at its return. In fact, beautytok revived the method last year with a blush-focused iteration. The conversation began with Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty Liquid Blush and its overly pigmented formula, which worried fans about how to use it. Experts are quick to recommend the underpainting method as a solution. It soon turned the harsh color to a perfectly flushed look.

In a tutorial by celebrity makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes, she opted for a creamy blush formula and applied it to the outer corner of her cheekbone. Once it’s seamlessly blended, the artist concealed everything with a lightweight foundation. The result? A gorgeous wash of color on the cheeks.
