With another variant discovered, even fully vaccinated people can’t help but worry if they’re protected. Here’s how the different vaccines stack up against the newest Delta variant.
Will it ever end? More than a year since we’ve been struck by the COVID-19 pandemic, recovery still seems to be out of reach—especially for the Philippines. And now, a new variant of COVID-19 named Delta has been discovered, and has now entered the country.
What Is The Delta Variant?
Also referred to as B1617.2, the Delta variant is highly transmissible. It was first discovered in India in December 2020, but has since spread in other countries including the US and the UK. According to Al Jazeera, the Delta variant has been recorded in 104 countries last July 4. In the Philippines, there have been 11 local Delta cases recorded last July 16, bringing the number up to 35, according to CNN. Believed to be more easily transmissible than the original strain, fully vaccinated people worry if their administered vaccine is enough protection against the Delta variant.
How Protected Are You With Your Vaccine?
Pfizer-BioNTech
According to an analysis by Public Health England, the two doses of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine shows to be 88% effective against symptomatic disease and about 96% effective against severe disease, hospitalization and death due to the Delta variant.
Moderna
The Moderna vaccine has been shown to be effective against the Delta variant. According to this Canadian study, Moderna is 72% effective against the Delta variant after one dose. Numerous studies show that Moderna and Pfizer vaccines offer the same protection against COVID-19.
Astra Zeneca
According to physician Dr. Eric Topol, the Astra Zeneca vaccine is around 60-67% effective against symptomatic infections, and 92% effective against hospitalization and death with the Delta variant. He shared this clinical effectiveness study on his Twitter.
SinoVac
The Sinovac vaccine is the world’s most used vaccine, with over 943 million doses delivered around the world. According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Sinovac vaccine showed to be 65.9% effective against Covid-19, 87.5% effective against hospitalization, and 86.3% effective against death. However, little study has been done to know how effective Sinovac is against the Delta variant.
Johnson & Johnson
According to a clinical trial, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is seen to be 85% effective against severe infection, and showed “strong, persistent” protection against hospitalization and death. This is further supported by an interim study that showed the Delta variant was neutralized by the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, 29 days after the first shot was administered.
Sputnik-V
The Sputnik-V vaccine, developed by Russia, is believed to be effective against the Delta variant. According to its developers, this vaccine is around 90% effective against the new Delta variant. Sputnik-V is also found by researchers to be 92% effective against the original strain of Covid-19.
