In order to grow in this competitive industry, artists and creators continuously explore new approaches, experiment with new mediums, and challenge traditional storytelling. With this, industry mainstays and veteran actors acknowledge Coco Martin’s directing style as a breath of fresh air and an exciting approach for growth in the entertainment industry.

After proving his refined eye for creative media through the successful six-year reign of FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano, Coco Martin is directing an action-filled series with his new directing techniques.

During the grand media conference of the new primetime series, FPJ’s Batang Quiapo, the entire cast says nothing but nice things about Coco. The intuitive approach of director-cum-actor Coco Martin has garnered admiration and respect from seasoned actors like Christopher De Leon, Irma Idlawan, Cherry Pie Picache, and John Estrada. Even the late Fernando Poe, Jr.’s daughter Lovi Poe has commended her fellow actor’s way of directing. Coco is known for his ability to give lines on the spot and for his emphasis on making sure that each scene feels organic rather than overly technical.

Theater actor Irma Adlawan admits to feeling a bit apprehensive about this unique approach. She is used to meticulous preparation and treating the script as her bible, which is a common practice among theater actors. However, she understands that Coco’s improvisational style is a challenge she must embrace in order to grow as an artist.

Cherry Pie Picache, another respected actress, shares that the most fulfilling experience for an actor is when they can collaborate with their director in creating a scene. According to her, actors are not just mere performers, but also co-creators, and she values this creative freedom as an actress. In an argument scene revealed in Batang Quiapo’s mediacon, the director simply gave Charo Santos, John Estrada, and Cherry Pie Picache the scene’s objectives and allowed their creativity to shine through. The actors disclosed that the result felt genuine.

Meanwhile, Charo Santos encouraged actors to have a change of mindset about improvisation. As a veteran actress herself, she admits that she was accustomed to the structured world of acting.

Creating an environment that encourages creativity and exploration, Coco Martin has earned a reputation as a director who brings out the best in his cast and crew. With his innovative approach, it is undeniable that it would inspire the next generation of Philippine filmmakers.
