The entertainment industry has lost one of its most talented and versatile actresses today.
The award-winning actress passed away at 5 PM today at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
According to her Facebook posts, she has been undergoing treatment for cancer in the said hospital. In her interview with MEGA for the February 2022 issue, the decision to move to New York was for her “rebirth”—starting a new life by getting rid of the things that symbolized her past life.
Her antagonist stint as Lavinia Arguelles in the film “Bituing Walang Ningning” catapulted the series of kontrabida roles that she has played. Till today, her scene with Sharon Cuneta (playing Dorina) where Gil utters, “You’re nothing but a second-rate, trying hard copycat!” is one of the most powerful and unforgettable scenes in Filipino media.
Cherie—starting out in the industry at 15 years old—also coveted numerous awards for her unbeatable powerhouse acting. She has received a Best Supporting Actress thrice at the Metro Manila Film Festival in 1985, 1989, and 2000. She also received the Best Actress and the Movie Supporting Actress of the Year at the 2015 Madrid International Film Festival for Mana and 2019 PMPC Star Awards for Citizen Jake, respectively.
In 2020, she held an online masterclass for those who would like to hone their talent in acting.
As a woman of passion, dedication, and talent, Cherie Gil has graced the cover of MEGA twice, in 2010 and in 2022.
The 59-year-old actress mentioned in her interview with MEGA for the 2022 issue that the masterclass was the last thing she did for the first time. She also emphasized on the three D’s that her family of actors follows in their long-running careers in the industry—dedication, determination, and discipline.
Several artists in the industry have expressed their grief in the passing of the actress, such as Director Jose Javier Reyes and actor and Gil’s nephew, Sid Lucero.

“When you say you’re a professional actor, it’s not just being a working actor. It’s also the ethics and attitude that goes with it. It’s sometimes difficult to intellectualize these concepts but if you put all that together, it all equates to the dignity you put into your craft.”
