Why Perfume Marinating May Not Be a Good Idea

Why Perfume Marinating May Not Be a Good Idea

By

TikTok users have started to marinate their clothes in perfume for a long-lasting scent, but behind a genius hack, it might not be the best for your clothes

The challenge with perfumes is how long they last, especially on a night out, and the several external factors that could strip the perfume’s smell away. To address this, TikTok users started a trend called “perfume marinating,” which involves spraying your chosen fragrance on your going-out top, folding it in a zip bag, and leaving it alone overnight to marinate for a long-lasting scent and no longer bringing the perfume bottle in one’s bag. It’s a good hack at the moment, but in the long run, it could be a regretful mistake that can’t be undone.

Stains

Often, we do a few—or too many spritzes of perfume on our clothing with the intention of smelling good, but a tiny spray could leave the fragrance on our clothes for several days. This could easily be a disaster if you’re the type to switch out your fragrances. Additionally, spraying perfume that contains alcohol and oil onto our clothes could leave out stains, especially white pieces of clothing.

Should you spritz your favorite fragrance on your clothing, be sure that your perfume is alcohol- and oil-free so you can continue to smell amazing throughout the day without the worry of staining your beloved clothes.

Change in Notes

Skin chemistry plays an important role in releasing particular perfume notes, and by spritzing your fragrance of choice on clothing instead of your skin, you might not be maximizing the true scent of your perfume.

Skin chemistry plays a big part in perfume scents. Spritzing on your favorite fragrance on your clothes may not bring out your perfume's notes and ingredients.

And while we’ve already established how scents can really make their stay worthwhile in our clothes, some notes and ingredients may change over time due to the lack of skin chemistry or heat, which potentially activates certain notes.

How Offensive!

The best perfumers already take into consideration the sillage and longevity of a fragrance. During the research and development, each scent is tested on how well it will last on skin and clothes. From there, they adjust which notes need to be stronger or weaker. With this said, the best scents won’t need marinating. Marinating your clothes with perfume can even do the opposite, instead of smelling better, your scent can come off too strong. Sure, it could wear off with a few washes, but if not, prepare for some looks your way—the offensive kind.

Be careful when spritzing your signature scent on your clothes. Instead, opt for spritzing a long-lasting perfume directly on your skin before dressing which will have you smelling good and turning heads all throughout the day.
