5 Fashion Trends to Expect at This Year’s MEGA Ball

By

A collective effort to bring forth creatives and their respective pieces that will further push the standards of fashion in the Philippines—this is what MEGA has been striving to do for the past decades. We give credit to those who dedicate their artistry to showcase a creativity that breathes in new perspectives and ideas that are inspired by all forms of art. Hence, it is only fitting to celebrate an artistry that goes beyond fashion—one that pays tribute to art itself.

Like every year, we raise our glasses to what must be celebrated, and we are slowly inching towards the annual event once again. With exactly a week left until the 12th, we are taking this time to predict the fashion trends we are expecting to see at this year’s MEGA Ball that celebrates the marriage of Filipino art and fashion.

Textures

A play in texture is a technique to elevate any design. Whether it is finished with vivid hues or it’s done in a monochromatic finish, details like feathers or prints require a meticulous eye to guarantee a cohesive look. We’re expecting to see this at the ball since art itself uses such techniques for texture to create depth in a designer’s creations.

Forms

In art, it is crucial to visualize a form before executing the initial draft. This is open to interpretation, which is why we are able to see artistic movements like cubism, suprematism, and neo-expressionism. These can either create fluidity or a static finish, but it is one of the most essential elements of the composition. It can be translated in fashion with forms that are structured like a column and empire silhouette, while a tent or a princess silhouette creates more movement—a few forms we’re predicting to see at the ball.

Fabric Manipulations

In fashion, fabric manipulation is used to alter the appearance of a design. May it be through draping, stitching, or weaving—a designer can experiment with various materials to achieve the finish they want for their creation. Similar to art, we have reached a point where techniques and routines are taught only to be deconstructed to showcase new possibilities to the audience. That being said, best to anticipate a roster of designs that may have played with fabric manipulation to display something new.

Subtle Embellishments

Every detail counts, and this is proven in many art forms. Little brush strokes have the ability to complete a canvas, while soft forms can have an impact on a sculpture. One must not oversee details that can make a stunning difference to a creation, so we’re taking this sentiment to the designs we will see at the MEGA Ball where designers can opt to add embellishments done in a muted manner.

Two-Toned Ensembles

Color theory is a guide to many artists in their journey of creation. Many have used it to see which complements which, and what creates a polarizing finish in the eyes. It is another critical element of composition that creates richness in a design, and in fashion, best believe that color theory is a sacred guide to many designers, especially if it’s a two-toned design. Whether it’s the classic black and white or beige and cream, there is a high chance that this execution will be seen at the highly anticipated event.
