Contrary to popular belief, makeup has no age limit. In a MEGA exclusive, we chat with Lei Ponce and Muriel Vega Perez to reveal their best-kept beauty secrets that are perfect for women over 40s
Beauty is not only for the youth. However, it’s undeniable that mature skin is overseen in the makeup conversation—let’s change that. “There isn’t so much discussion about mature skin unless it’s about anti-aging products,” celebrity makeup artist Lei Ponce expressed. “Don’t be afraid to wear makeup because the moment you feel beautiful when wearing it, that is the time wherein you decide to be yourself. Celebrate life! Beauty has no age because any age is beautiful.”
Meanwhile, fellow celebrity makeup artist Muriel Vega Perez encourages beauty fans to take a more positive approach to the aging narrative. “I believe we can do an age-delaying routine, but never anti-aging,” he said. Perez also reminded everyone that makeup doesn’t have an age limit. “Makeup application is still the best way to express ourselves, and it is also a good way for us to feel good not just on the outside, but also from the inside.”
Embracing the beauty of your age means transitioning into makeup practices that best suit your skin. It can be daunting, but fret not. In this MEGA exclusive, celebrity makeup artists Lei Ponce and Muriel Vega Perez unveil their best-kept beauty secrets that are perfect for mature skin.
The best beauty practice for mature skin
“One of the common misconceptions when doing makeup for mature skin is focusing on covering the flaws,” Lei Ponce pointed out. “This is the best time to celebrate your age, embrace your individuality, and use makeup to polish your beauty.” According to the celebrity makeup artist, the best beauty practice for mature skin is to prioritize skin health. “In order to achieve a fresh and radiant complexion, make sure to hydrate the skin before putting on makeup,” he shared. “The skin produces less oil as we age, which makes the makeup crease or cake.”
It’s one sentiment that Muriel Vega Perez agrees with. In fact, he added an expert tip on what products work well with mature skin. “Look into formulas that have hydrating, moisturizing, and protecting properties,” he mentioned. Ponce also recommended, “The best kind of products are those that can provide and retain moisture. My recommendations are hydrating primers, liquid foundation, micro-fine loose powder, moisture-rich creamy lipstick, and cream blush.”
The key to a radiant base
One of the most important makeup processes for mature skin is skin preparation. As for an expert-approved routine? “First, I start by spritzing my trusted hydrating face mist to the skin,” Lei Ponce shared. “While the face is still damp, I proceed with applying a hyaluronic acid serum and massaging the skin in an upward motion. Make sure that the skin absorbs the product before applying moisturizer and eye cream.” Elsewhere, he completed his routine with sunblock, hydrating primer, and lip balm.
Meanwhile, Muriel Vega Perez shared his insight on mastering the coveted radiant base makeup. “It is best to use sheer finish products with coverage,” he explained. “Good formulas are CC blur creams or hydrating foundations that benefit the skin and are lightweight to the skin. Don’t forget to set it with a good translucent powder.”
A good eye and brow routine
The right eye and brow makeup can drastically improve one’s overall look. “Full, defined brows make the face appear younger and more youthful, but as time passes, eyebrows have a tendency to get sparser,” Ponce explained. “Good thing there are brow products in the market that can mimic brow hairs by drawing them in. If you have bald spots in your brows, use a brown pencil first, then set it with brow powder. Then, you may opt to draw brow hair if necessary.”
Here’s a tip! Never over-pluck your brow hairs or pluck out the grey hairs as this can destroy the follicle, which in turn, creates a gap where hair will no longer grow. Use a colored brow gel to cover grey hairs.
As for eye makeup, the celebrity makeup artist clarified that it can be subjective for mature skin since we age differently. “I opt for a soft smoky eye to lift the eyes, avoiding so much product on the crease. Stay [away] from hues like grays and browns—these tend to make the eyes look older and tired. I suggest that you go for warm tones that create a feeling of light, and warmth,” he instructed. “You can also play with shimmer but make sure to place it on the lids where there is no texture to add up dimension to your eye makeup.”
Lei Ponce spelled out the importance of eyeliner for creating definition in the eyes.“You can wear eyeliner alone, but make sure you smudge it for a softer look,” he shared. “I recommend using brown eyeliner for this makeup application. You may also apply a waterproof black pencil liner under the lash line to create the illusion of full lashes so you can ditch your falsies.”
Choosing the right color
There is no age limit to exploring color. “Any age group can play around with color,” Lei Ponce noted. “Remember, makeup is art, and it’s an expression of yourself.” Furthermore, Muriel Vega Perez revealed that no one should be scared of experimenting with colors. “I believe that shade and color choices should speak more about personality. As we hit the age of 40, it is also a good way to reinvent ourselves.”
