The proper blush placement can be equally transformative. To think it only takes a few swishes to lift the face naturally. Combine it with a complementing shade and it can instantly awaken the skin. And besides, it’s the only makeup category that can deliver the coveted rosy glow. “Blush placements are powerful,” says celebrity makeup artist Japeth Purog. “It can drastically enhance one’s overall look while changing the illusion of a face shape.”

It’s undeniable that there is a renewed curiosity about blush placements, so we called on Japeth Purog for his expert insight to learn more about the different methods and products to use. In this MEGA exclusive, the celebrity makeup artists delivered a crash course on blush basics and discussed the trending technique that is taking over the beauty sphere by storm.
The blush theory
Many beauty fans commit themselves to the age-old favorite trick: smile and apply a bright blush directly on the apples of the cheeks. But in due course, an influx of techniques emerged. “Today, there are a lot of blush techniques that can cater to one’s face shape and desired effect,” he explained. “For an oval face, the application can vary. However, I recommend applying the blush on the apples or along the cheekbone for a more lifted look.”
As we continued our beauty chat, he detailed the best way to apply blush for beauty lovers who have a square face shape. “Apply the blush toward the hairline, below the cheekbone, and straight back toward the ears,” he shared. “This technique helps soften the angle of the face.” And as for a round face shape? The celebrity makeup artist reminded fans to avoid applying blush directly on the apples of the cheeks. “Instead, contour the face by sweeping blush up, along the cheekbone and to the hairline. This will highlight and lift the cheekbone,” he added.
The new method
In beautytok, all attention is on the blush technique with an unconventional placement. It includes swishing a flattering color under the eyes, onto the upper cheeks, and across the bridge of the nose. The result? A healthy flush and sculpted look. “This kind of blush technique is mostly seen in the Japanese and Korean makeup style,” Japeth confessed. “It gives a beautiful wash of color and a fresher vibe.”
However, the concept behind this technique is not entirely new. The look is founded by professional makeup artist Igari Shinobu and, like what Japeth said, has been predominantly seen in both Japanese and Korean beauty culture. It has gained popularity for providing a rosy glow while neutralizing other redness in the face. Moreover, it’s the perfect method for anyone who wants to achieve tireless-looking eyes.
Take it from the expert
It comes as no surprise that there is a long competition between cream and powder blush. To settle the debate, the celebrity makeup artist weighs in. “There should not be competition—it should always depend on the skin type,” he clarified. “For normal skin, you can actually use both formula cream or powder. For oily skin, I suggest using the powder blush. It would help in mattifying the skin. For dry skin types, I would prefer using the cream blush to help moisturize the skin.”
