Grace in Inabel

Miss Universe 2018 kicked off the night with a white custom creation by Filipino designer Anthony Ramirez. Crafted from inabel, a handwoven fabric native to Ilocos. The minimalist elegance of the dress was intentionally contrasted with Mexico’s vibrant cultural patterns and bold prints, perfectly complementing the pageant’s setting.

By combining the understated grace of the beaded embellishments and the inabel fabric with the lively hues and textures of Mexico’s artistic heritage, Catriona’s look became a harmonious representation of two cultures coming together: “As someone who personally loves maximalism and color, we were inspired by Mexico’s diverse prints and bold patterns,” the beauty queen expressed on Instagram. “Contrasting this custom beaded inabel dress by Anthony Ramirez against a vibrant tapestry of Mexico’s artistic heritage, it felt like a match made in heaven.”

Pink Power and Poise

Catriona’s second look is a stunning tribute to Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. Made by Filipino designer Jaggy Glarino, the ensemble embodies the power and grace of womanhood by fusing structure and shape with fluidity.

Drawing inspiration from Mexico’s national flower, the dahlia, the gown celebrates its beauty and movement, with intricate detailing that captures the essence of the flower. The dramatic gloves are the finishing touch for a powerfully elegant number.
