Get a glimpse of modern ternos at TernoCon 2018, where 30 finalists and renowned mentors showcase innovative designs blending tradition with contemporary fashion.
With only two months left before TernoCon 2018, 30 finalists of the contest have already started designing and producing two ternos that they will be unveiling on the main event alongside their mentors.
According to chief mentor Inno Sotto, “I’m excited to see what they would all finally come up with and certainly very nervous as to how they would actually look. But rest assured, all these 30 designers are gifted.”
Helping Sotto supervise the designs of various finalists nationwide, three mentors were appointed to guide all the designers: JC Buendia for Luzon, Cary Santiago for Visayas, and Len Cabili for Mindanao.
Mentorship is critically important for Inno Sotto because he believes that “it is not the fault of the ignorant to be ignorant; it is the fault of those who know that they do not teach them what they know.”
From handling different types of fabrics, couture techniques, to creating clothes by incorporating traditional crafts of indigenous communities, the mentors recently gave us a sneak peek of what they taught and will be showcasing at the Terno Con 2018:
JC Buendia
Choosing to present a modern take on the Balintawak terno that was traditionally a country version for fiestas, JC Buendia perfectly showed the right amount of skin with his backless top terno and added splash of colors with his floral embroidery detailing on the skirt.
Cary Santiago
Cary Santiago gave us a preview of what a true Filipina goddess would look like in an astonishing terno. Santiago showcased a modern formal terno in sheer fabric with classic cultural patterns highlighting women’s fluidity and femininity.
Len Cabili
Channeling the call of the rich resources of the Mindanaoan seas is Len Cabili’s creation. She opted to feature a blue colored formal terno that was embellished with a sophisticated mother-of-pearl detailing.
All 30 designers will present a total of 60 ternos, while the three design mentors will each showcase a 10-piece collection during Terno Con 2018’s main event on November 11, 2018.
