What makes SB19 a force to be reckoned with in the subject of P-Pop? Well, for starters, they propelled a new era of it
Your experience with music is surely a part of your brain’s core memory. Were you a child who heard songs on the radio that changed your life? Maybe you’re the teenager who, because of a track, picked up an instrument or started writing songs? Perhaps you are the fan who scrimped and saved on your allowance to watch your idols live. Fast forward to today, there still must be a song or an artist that underscores the impact of music in your life? If you say SB19, then we’re not surprised.

In 2019, a dance practice video for the quintet’s track “Go Up” made people talk. Today, Pablo, Stell, Josh, Justin, and Felip are not just mere subjects of P-Pop conversations. They are the reason why people are talking about this genre of OPM today with outright freedom, fun, and definitely pride.
From what started as a cookie cutter K-Pop-patterned group, SB19 found themselves with their own sound, style, and story. As artists whose hands get dirty in recording, creative production, and passion projects, they have used their voices to amplify their fellow Filipino creatives to do the same. Apart from these idols, their fans especially feel and resonate with Pablo, Stell, Josh, Justin, and Felip. MEGA reached out to A’TIN on X (previously Twitter) for their thoughts on SB19’s impact on P-Pop, and here’s what they have to say.
Leaving Some Self-reflection
The truth is, fangirling doesn’t have to be all serious. After all, we first started out with the good vibes. But with SB19’s fans, their sonic appreciation comes with an internal dialogue, too. And we love that! If songs and artists make us reflect on the bigger picture of life, then that means they’re leaving an impact one way or another.
#SB19 changed a lot of perception that #PPOP is “baduy”…

That it’s not only about making music – it doesn’t end there. It’s also about inspiring your audience to be good people. That it’s not about competition but a movement – to grow the ppop community for the benefit of the whole country. 🇵🇭❤️ #SB19 @SB19Official https://t.co/j7JiWsffLD

SB19 amplified a sense of patriotism in me in terms of music, culture, and language. Their vision of raising the banner of PH in the music scene around the globe has grounded them through the years despite and inspite.

It makes me think, how else can I advocate for my country? https://t.co/g4P7KPxCn8
Mahalima made me appreciate that music isn't just about the melody or what kind of genre it has. Music is much deeper, it has stories to tell or emotions we can feel. Different genres, different languages/dialects, & different Filipino stories, that's what makes it "P-POP".#SB19 https://t.co/QSjaeWrDpq

Playing Hope into the Tracks
When a formula works for the audience, best believe that we will see an influx of releases revolving around certain tropes and concepts. Case in point? Romantic love and all its forms on television, film, and music. While we have releases that also tackle different subject matters, market value is reassured with something that’s proven and tested. SB19’s range of concepts, which also touch on love but also of the road to following one’s dreams—the good and the bad that come with it—resonates deeply with their fans who dare to dream especially during these trying times. And the boys do it in different beats, flow, and moves!
Music is a story told with melodies. SB19 showed me that PPop can also tell these Filipino stories. Sure, a PPop can be about love but a love that is profound. SB19 showed that it can also be about PINOY perseverance, struggle, humility, gratitude, hope, and love for the country. https://t.co/if3wQOVSYk

I’m not into OPM/Ppop or any tagalog songs. I only like western songs. SB19 songs lang talaga why I am switching to OPM. Ang galing nila. To me, SB19 symbolizes HOPE because they inspire everyone who dreams and dream na naglaho na. @SB19Official #SB19 https://t.co/r00lz4SgKG

OA pakinggan pero #SB19 made me believe in OPM again. Before SB19 happened to me, i only listen to TS, The Script, Maroon 5, The Vamps, Ariana. Walang OPM. Pero nung napakinggan ko MaPa at Hanggang Sa Huli, made me realize na shet kaya din ng Pinoy and the rest is history https://t.co/40TICR2orJ

Setting a Standard of Artistry
Rising at a time when Korean idols have set a standard in the entertainment industry, SB19 is one to be at par with them—not for competition, but an affirmation that Filipinos can thrive in the realm of pop in the country and abroad. SB19 delivers not only a performance showcasing their vocal skills; they make sure that their choreographies are coordinated, and facial expressions on point. Taking their individual and collective impact to the next level, the P-Pop Kings also take an interest in their sartorial storytelling. Leaving this legacy, they also make room for more P-Pop groups and artists to follow suit.
#SB19 made me more hopeful in OPM industry for they not only introduce new sounds to Pinoy listeners but they gave more substance to elevate the P-Pop community and set a new standard for our young musicians. https://t.co/lbTL8Tbg99

#SB19 ability to write lyrics that are so relatable & perform songs invoking message & emotions that even foreigners can understand is what makes me appreciate Ppop. Ppop before are mostly novelty, & they have shown that they can offer more. Breaking barriers indeed. https://t.co/tR1Nxgw3kL

They erased my "baduy" perception and eventually the perception that younger artists are just "copycats". I learned to appreciate more Tagalog songs and explore other genres and P-pop groups. #SB19 @SB19Official https://t.co/lb1vr0MWQK

Opening More Room for Genres
From kundiman to rock and hiphop, the genres ruling OPM evolve from time to time. The beauty of P-Pop is it is an opportunity to blend and exhibit multiple sounds in one. In the case of SB19, they’ve redefined today’s Filipino music with a reigning pop sound in different flavors. In their EP Pagtatag!, You can have a punchy astig beat with rap verses and birit refrains with “Gento.” Meanwhile, “I Want You” follows suit with a sultry melody and an equally moving live performance.
We belong to the older generation. SB19 opened our ears and made us appreciate hiphop, EDM, and even rap songs. We are not boy/girl group fans but SB19 made us appreciate this genre's music. Now, we are avid supporters of this community. https://t.co/feOjoPtSvE

I’ve been a fan of OPM bands since forever. Pop wasn’t really my jam coz I like rock better. But the reason why I fell in love with #SB19 is their songs’ lyricism. The way the group poetically narrates stories through their songs, and not to mention their powerful vocals. https://t.co/PjyPt8OEKs

not really a music fan as i am more into sports. but, #SB19 is just hard to ignore. their songs speak to you, their performances tell a story. "hindi basta basta gento", as they said, and they're living by & for it. they are the PPop standard yet on the league of their own. https://t.co/0eFNk1EG3d

#SB19 made me believe that as an artist you don’t have to box yourself into one genre, and confine yourself within the boundaries people are used to.

They are living up to the meaning of their name, “Sound Break”, they really are breaking the norms of the music industry. https://t.co/tqr1no3nBq
Sharing the Filipino Pride
The best artists know the rule to becoming a cut above the rest—follow the rules till you’re in the game, then break them. SB19 has done this at the beginning with their ballad “Tilaluha”, a track on heartbreak. “Go Up” features the summer feel, its remix mimicking K-Pop tunes with layers of beats. Since then, they’ve come so far with playing around with words and sound—mixing languages and genres together. Case in point? “Bazinga.” For a country that thrives on being a melting pot of cultures, SB19 surely highlights our identity, history, and culture in each track they release and performance they stage.

SB19 made me appreciate OPM music more.

i'm really into foreign songs before. kaya nagulat ako sa sarili ko ngayon kasi 99% ng pinapakinggan ko ay opm/ppop na simula ng nakilala ko ang SB19. i just realized na ang ganda pala ng sarili nating musika. they awakened the sleeping patriot within me. https://t.co/nnbo9iCXij

Because of #SB19 they gave me hope that the Filipino music industry would one day completely flourish in the international stage, to the point that it would become one of the biggest factors in helping the economy of the Philippines. I'm with SB19 with that ambition. https://t.co/h196luboeW
