Mavy and Cassy Legaspi on Nepotism, Privilege, and Carving Their Own Paths

The Legaspi twins may have two of the most cherubic faces in the industry, but their wisdom at 22 is far from being childlike

This is an excerpt from MEGA Entertainment’s September 2023 Issue

At the tender age of three, wonder twins Mavy and Cassy Legaspi already tasted the spotlight. Because they were the cutest toddlers in town at the time, they first starred in a milk commercial that was shot in what Cassy describes as an aesthetic garden.

“That was the time I cried because the lights were too harsh, but normal lights lang pala,” she recalls in her usual bubbly self. “But, of course, I was younger, and my skin back then was more sensitive so my mom had to distract me by playing with a dog.” (The mom she is talking about is, of course, actress Carmina Villaroel. Their dad is actor Zoren Legaspi.) And just like that, the shoot went on smoothly, and the twins were as professional in front of the camera as they are now.

Cassy further explains the way they feel comfortable in front of the lenses: “We got used to it because growing up in front of the camera or anything like that was kind of like going to school.

It felt that normal. It doesn’t feel like work.” Mavy agrees, and adds, “Besides getting used to it, we’re not afraid to try new things. We’re not awkward even if we feel different or even look different. We’re just here to have fun.”

The twins are crediting their parents for being ahead of their time: They’ve always done parenting in a more progressive way than their peers. They may have been born in the spotlight, with dozens of commercials already under their belt, but their parents made sure that they had the most relaxed and natural upbringing.

Mavy praises his parents when we got to the subject of parenting: “I give big credit to Papa Z and Mama C. As much as we were born into the spotlight as celebrities or showbiz royalties, they really did their best to have us live in that normal space. We were able to hang out with friends in the mall, go to school. They were also able to find us a school where we didn’t feel like we’re on a pedestal.” He adds, “We’re just normal human beings.”

In the advent of the term “nepo baby” (the shortened term for nepotism baby, or children of public personalities or celebrities who are starting to experience the spotlight inhabited by their parents or relatives), some of these celebrity children are being crucified for their last names.
