The bandana neckwear has made a resurgence and is currently having a moment in the fashion world, appearing on a variety of occasions from high-end fashion events to casual outings

From red carpets to the hottest music festivals, bandanas are making a remarkable comeback, adding a touch of style and flair to any outfit. With its consistent reappearance, it’s clearly time to dust off those old handkerchiefs and invest in brand new ones, since this trend seems to be here to stay.

Bandanas through the years

A timelessly fashionable and culturally significant accessory, the bandana has a fascinating history that encompasses continents and centuries. It originated from the Hindi word bāṅdhnū, which translates to “to tie,” and has a rich heritage that can be traced back to South Asia and the Middle East in the late 17th century. Through the course of history, the bandana’s journey was shaped by colonization and trade, which led to its name finding its way into the English language around the mid-18th century. The original Hindi word was later anglicized into “bandannoe” through Portuguese influence and eventually evolved into the term we know today.

Since its inception, the bandana has adorned the necks of various groups of men, ranging from sailors, cowboys, farmers, miners, etc. In the 1970s, the bandana took on a special significance for homosexual men, whose use of different-colored handkerchiefs signified their various sexual orientations and preferences. Different colored bandanas have also been used to signify gang affiliations, such as to distinguish members of notorious Los Angeles gangs like the Crips and the Bloods. As time passed, the bandana continued to evolve and find itself tied to various subcultures.
