NYFW Fall/Winter 2023: The Womenswear Trend Report

We’re ending New York Fashion Week with a runway trend report

We’ve hit the second month of the year and it already feels like the fashion industry is at its busiest season yet. 2023 started with the new line of menswear from Paris and Milan, followed by Haute Couture Week in Paris once again, and Copenhagen Fashion Week also had its turn just last February 2.

This time around, the spotlight was on New York Fashion Week, which lasted from February 10 to 15, so it’s only fitting to gather the reigning trends on the runway that will likely cascade to this year’s Fall/Winter fashion.

Cinched in

If you’ve been keeping up with the trends on fashion and social media, you’ve probably seen fellow enthusiasts show off their take on the cinched waist. Whether it’s through a pair of low-rise jeans or a corset, we’re not surprised to see another iteration of this trend on the runway. The silhouette seemed to be integrated through cropped cuts, simple ties, and cinched-in bodice on oversized clothing.

Squared out shoulders

Seeing that minimalist fashion isn’t going anywhere soon, it only makes sense for the structured shoulder to be an added detail because of the subtle elevated touch it can give to a simple outerwear piece. It can also be a nod to the menswear collection that was showcased last month since they also house the same detail, but in an exaggerated manner.

Slinky maxi’s

We definitely called it when we said maxis have made its return to the fashion world. Spring/Summer 2023 had its run of the maxi silhouette, and it’s continuing its reign since it made an appearance once again at NYFW’s Fall/Winter collections. But this time around, the relaxed shape was done with an edgy touch as they were finished in fabric or materials such as velvet, metallic shine, and satin.

Prints on textures combo

It’s definitely an unexpected combo since Fall/Winter is mostly known for its muted and darker tones, but that’s just how fashion moves nowadays. This particular combo was quite the favorite, and we saw it take place in shows such as AKNVAS, Coach, and Melke.

Furred up

The trend moves to the other side of the spectrum once again as fur and knitted outerwear made its presence known this Fall/Winter season. The trend went from patched racer jackets and hard-edge leather jackets to vivid knits and puffed up fur jackets as seen on Bibhu Mohapatra, Heron Preston, and Prabal Gurung.
