Although these businesses are rising to prominence now, she explained their fascinating past. “Speakeasies came about in the 1920s during the prohibition period in the United States when it was illegal to sell alcohol, which is why most of these bars are ‘hidden,’ have no flashy signage, and are very nondescript from the outside. These characteristics are what carry on in most places today.”
