To shampoo or not to shampoo–that is the question many beauty-obsessed girls and boys have to face on a daily basis.
When I was a little girl, I was appalled with my grandmother’s suggestion to limit my shampooing to a few times a week. Won’t it get dirty? Oily? I often wondered. But as I grew older, I realized that she did indeed have a point–washing your hair too often can strip it of its natural oils, making it prone to breakage.
How often should one shampoo their hair, then? After having conversations with friends and professionals in the industry, I have come to the conclusion that no two scalps are alike. Through trial and error, we can create our own hair routines. In a tropical country such as the Philippines, however, many individuals are more prone to oiliness. So whether you’re comfortable washing your hair every day, every other day, or once a week (although that may be pushing it in this humidity), it helps to have products to bring out your best, most refreshed mane yet. Here a few suggestions:
Kérastase Chronologiste Gommage Exfoliating Pre-Shampoo
The day before you decide to skip on the shampoo, make sure to prepare your hair with a purifying product, such as Kérastase’s Chronologiste Gommage Exfoliating Pre-Shampoo. Because it contains micro-particles and naturally derived ingredients, the product helps prepare you for shampoo by removing impurities and detoxifying the scalp.
TRESemmé Instant Refresh Dry Shampoo
If you know your hair is going to fall within the day, spray some dry shampoo at the roots. I personally keep a spare can of TRESemmé’s Instant Refresh Dry Shampoo in my work drawer for days when my hair needs a little boost. After using it, my hair is instantly refreshed, as the product easily absorbs oil and dirt.

Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Texturizing Hair Cream
If I want something that gives slightly more texture than a dry shampoo, I’ll go for a texturizing cream. This product from Not Your Mother’s works best when hair is slightly damp, so you can run it through a little water or a spray before application. After scrunching the product all over your hair with your hands, hair will appear extra tousled.
Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer
Another solution to avoiding oiliness? A great blowout. If you consider your hair to be a priority, you might as well invest in something that promises quick, controlled drying with built-in heat protection to maintain your mane’s natural shine.
Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Spray
To maintain your hair’s texture, you’ll need something light and volumizing. Aveda’s Pure Abundance Hair Spray ticks all the boxes, as it is a weightless spray that helps boost strands with natural bulking agents such as acacia gum.
