In a YouTube beauty talk, Dermatologist Dr. Mara Evangelista-Huber and Y.O.U Beauty’s Product Manager Jennika Casin listed down some of the top Asian skincare rules
Asian skin, most specifically Southeast Asian skin, comes in different tones and types—a result of our unique genetic makeup and weather conditions—from oily to combination to sensitive skin. Because of this, it can also be prone to oiliness, acne, and hyperpigmentation, common concerns that need proper evaluation and care.
The most ideal advise is to go to a specialist, as looking after our skin can often feel overwhelming, but a good routine can help it look and feel great. In MEGA and Y.O.U Beauty’s latest YouTube video collaboration, dermatologist Dr. Mara Evangelista-Huber and Y.O.U Beauty’s Product Manager Jennika Casin shared tips and recommendations to help develop that healthy glass skin for Southeast Asian skin type.
Here are some of the rules to keep in mind when taking care of our skin as discussed by the experts:
- Get to Know Our Skin
There’s nothing wrong with checking Instagram and TikTok from time to time to check on what’s trending in the world of skin care, but it’s important that we understand what our specific skin type actually needs.
“Our skincare products have to address the unique requirements of our [Asian] skin, which may be more sensitive, prone to oiliness and acne, and is at risk for hyperpigmentation and scarring,” Dr. Mara mentioned in the video as a good starting point for getting to know our skin.
Jennika agreed with these top concerns and to help simplify our skincare routine, she recommended Y.O.U Radiance Glow series to complete your day-to-night skincare routine.
“It’s formulated in Japan and is suitable for Southeast Asians like us with oily, combination, and sensitive skin. It is actually infused with Japanese Sakura extract to help reveal your skin’s healthy glow in just 10 days,” Jennika shared.
This Sakura-infused series includes a facial foam, toner essence, serum, day cream, and night gel that is easy to follow. Sometimes, less can be more.
- Choose Foaming Cleanser in Humid Weather
Practicing proper skincare habits is as essential as having a good skincare routine. For instance, washing our face twice a day, especially in humid weather. With the hot weather, our skin can look and feel oilier, and we can become really sweaty.
“A foaming face wash with moisturizing ingredients will definitely do the job while also keeping your skin hydrated and protected from the elements,” Dr. Mara explained.
In washing off excess oil in our humid weather, Jennika suggested the Radiance Glow Purifying Facial Foam. She explained that “It’s an amino acid-rich facial foam that cleanses and removes impurities without stripping or drying out your skin.”
This facial foam keeps the skin clean as we go about our day, and the beauty of this is that the foam does all the work.
- Tone Up For Our Best Skin
After cleansing, the toner usually comes next. As Dr. Mara mentioned, “Toners aren’t always a necessary step in a skincare routine, but it may play a role in your skin care routine. What a toner does for your skin depends on what ingredients a toner has.”
“Think of using a toner to hydrate, clear up, and exfoliate for a radiant complexion,” Jennika said, recommending the Radiance Glow Toner Essence for your skin.
The toner is lightweight and supercharged with brightening and hydrating ingredients like C-three Complex that is 7x more powerful than regular vitamin C, 99% high purity Niacinamide, Japanese Sakura Extract, and Panthenol. It also has the power to purify, clarify, and fortify, all while leaving skin hydrated, balanced and fresh—something skin types in our hot, humid climate will appreciate.
- Balance Our Skin’s pH
The pH of our skin is a measure of acidity, and this has to be kept within a certain range for the skin to look and function well. According to Dr. Mara, an “unbalanced pH can cause damage to the skin barrier, making it dry, tight, itchy and prone to irritation.”
It’s important to use skin care products that respect the skin’s natural pH, so we can follow up the toner with Radiance Glow Illuminating Serum that further helps repair skin and minimize pores.
“To calm skin and strengthen the skin’s barrier, it [serum] is also enriched with Bisabolol, a major component derived from Chamomile to help soothe skin redness,” Jennika added.
- Always Use Sunscreen to Protect
Most of us know the importance of wearing sunscreen during summer months to avoid sunburn and damage, but it really should be a year-round protection.
“You shouldn’t skip sunscreen, because not only does it prevent sunburn and skin cancer, it can also slow down skin aging, which can manifest as fine lines, wrinkles, and dry and rough skin.” Dr. Mara reminded the audience.
Jennika acknowledged this, referring to herself as a “sunscreen girl” who uses it everyday. She recommends the Radiance Glow Advanced Day Cream to help moisturize, brighten, and protect your skin.
The day cream is a lightweight, non-greasy cream equipped with sunscreen agents to help protect skin, especially in this tropical climate.
- Repair and Renew
After a good skincare routine, it’s about time to let the skin rest after exposing it to pollutants, UV rays, dirt, and grime during the day.
“If you often fall asleep at night without taking off your makeup and doing your nighttime skincare routine, you might wake up with dull and dry skin,” Dr. Mara warned. “So don’t skip your nighttime skin care routine, because this helps refresh, repair and renew your skin.”
To help prepare our skin overnight, Jennika has the solution: the Radiance Glow Advanced Night Gel. “This is a lightweight gel texture infused with lavender aroma for overnight relaxation and radiant, supple skin the next morning.”
With the right skincare products and practices, Dr. Mara mentioned that “the confidence to bloom begins in you. Just remember: the goal is healthy skin, because healthy skin is beautiful skin. When you feel good about your skin, your glow shines from the inside out.”
Jennika wrapped up the conversation by embracing self-love: “You radiate every time you choose YOU.”
