These Worn-Out Sneakers From Balenciaga and Adidas Cause a Fashion Controversy

The dirty sneaker trend is back as it joins the lineup of the Balenciaga and Adidas collaboration—but is it a hit or miss?

Choosing what pair to wear for the day requires a lot of thinking—if it matches the color of your ‘fit, if it resembles your vibe, or if it is just comfortable. But nowadays it is not all about finding the perfect shoe appearance—it is the imperfect look of the shoes that makes it stand out even more.

Balenciaga is regarded as a luxury brand that brings a statement of high status and fashion taste when worn. It has already developed signature brand collaborations, marking its heightened standard in the game of luxury.

With its recent collaboration with Adidas, luxury and sportswear lovers alike expressed how excited they were with the release, thinking that the collaboration was a good idea. Included in the brands’ launch is a pair of worn-out shoes for $950, which certainly caught the attention of most people on social media. Although the dirty sneaker design is not new in the market even for Balenciaga’s past collections, people probably always have reservations when it comes to this kind of trend.

The worn-out pair is an ode to the original Stan Smith line of Adidas, which explains its perforated three-stripe mark on each side. The shoe is in powder blue color with noticeable smudges of black and gray. It has thin rubber soles, a fabric made out of lamb and cow skin, and Adidas and Balenciaga logos printed on the shoes’ exterior.

The announcement has received mixed reviews on social media—some liked the design because it sends a statement of imperfection despite being a luxurious piece, while others sent over negative reactions by saying that it looked like a recycled pair from garbage, just with a new label.

Despite the stir that the shoes have caused over social media, the item still appears on Balenciaga’s website and is expected to be available soon.
