There’s plenty of classic trends making a comeback for the season; whether it’s micro sunglasses, chainmail dresses, or scrunchies, it’s safe to say that fashion is being taken over by nostalgia and for us 90s kids, we surely can’t complain. And while some of them are quite unorthodox and dare we say unwearable for most, it’s quite a great thing to see the sudden rise of time-honored trends that used to be deemed “awkward” are now being celebrated in high fashion.
Alexander Wang is joining in the throwback party – bringing back the banana clip thick-haired girls have trusted for hold since the beginning of time. If you know anything about Wang, he manages to turn anything cool. And with the banana clip (or claw clip for some) probably being the last thing you’d label “chic”, he just proved that he can absolutely revamp anything into a stylish statement.
For Fall 2018, the designer sent models down the runway with their hair clipped in the 90s staple accessory. But of course, it’s not just in regular plastic. Wang made a case for a glam version of the trend, designing the accessory in chrome silver and stamped with Wang’s logo.
Speaking on the hair direction for the show, hairstylist, Guido explained the vision, “The hair is a take on the power dressing of the ‘80s and the idea that the model is someone in the corporate world,” he told. He combed the hair back with a combination of gel, pomade, and hairspray before slicking it into low ponytails and twisting and clipping the tail in place. The strong hold of the hairspray kept the style in place while the pomade and gel aided the creation of those deep comb lines.
Now that Wang has officially brought the banana clip back to the runway, it’s time to take it out of your bathroom and bedroom drawers and sport your best 90s girl look the high fashion way.
