After helming la Maison de Chanel for decades and constantly created exquisite collections season after season, the German-born designer has been regarded as the fashion world’s most prolific designer in the modern age.

Aside from being known for his dark-tinted sunglasses, white ponytail, and black leather gloves, Lagerfeld is also known for being notoriously workaholic. And up until the end, sources close to Chanel said he was still working to make sure everything will go well for the F/W 2019 runway show of Fendi—Italian luxury label he also presided for decades.

It was only during Chanel’s Haute couture show in January that gave a sign of his declining health. According to WWD, in a statement Chanel provided, “for the traditional greeting at the end of the show, Mr. Lagerfeld, artistic director of Chanel, who was feeling tired, asked Virginie Viard, director of creative studio of the house, to represent him and greet the guests alongside the bride.”

Chanel said it has appointed studio director Virginie Viard to perpetuate the legendary designer’s work.

Reports have yet to conclude the cause of death.
